POLICE in Saltash have issued a final warning to motorists in the town following a joint enforcement visit to North Road this week.
Officers worked alongside Cornwall Council Enforcement Officers after receiving numerous complaints from local residents, councillors and Safer Saltash about vehicles being parked illegally or dangerously in the area.
Concerns include motorists parking behind the white zig-zag markings at the crossing, on yellow lines and on the pavement.
Police say such parking can create a serious danger to pedestrians by restricting visibility at the crossing and making it harder for approaching drivers to see people attempting to cross the road.
Letters have been delivered to residents in the area warning that active patrols and enforcement action will now take place. The letter makes clear the warning is being issued to everyone in the area and does not suggest that individual households have breached the rules.
Police said enforcement could result in financial penalties and, where appropriate, penalty points on a driver’s licence. Parking on yellow lines or the pavement may also result in a Penalty Charge Notice from Cornwall Council.
Officers stressed they would much rather spend their time dealing with other issues than issuing fines or adding penalty points to drivers' licences.
The force said the purpose of the warning was to give motorists the opportunity to change their behaviour before enforcement action is taken.
A vehicle observed parked in the area has been given a final warning, along with other motorists found to be parking inappropriately.
Police are now urging drivers to think carefully about where they leave their vehicles and to make sure they park legally and safely.
The joint operation is part of efforts to address ongoing concerns about parking in North Road and improve safety for pedestrians and other road users.
