PLANS are underway to connect Newquay Harbour with the town centre to help attract footfall.

Newquay BID has applied for funding to extend the bunting in the precinct down to the quay to benefit businesses there.

The business body also plans to install festoon lighting on boats that are out of the water on the harbourside during the festive period if funding is secured.

Newquay BID has already installed colour-changing uplighting to enhance the cliffs behind the harbour businesses.

The scheme, which has been funded through the Town Deal initiative, aims to celebrates the natural beauty of the area and can be seen from vantage points across Newquay.

The Newquay BID project has been a community effort made possible through close collaboration with harbour businesses and the harbour master’s office.

There are now plans to secure further funding so that more uplighters can be installed at the harbour.

Newquay BID manager Mark Warren said: “At BID we want to make a big effort with the harbour. It is a fantastic harbour and during the wintertime why not celebrate the harbour year-round.

“There are great businesses down there, which could extend their opening hours if more people are encouraged to visit. It’s an idyllic location. It’s my favourite part of Newquay. “It is family friendly, and I think we need to celebrate that more.

“Newquay as a town was born from the harbour. My objective is to the link the town centre with the harbour with bunting. If there is bunting in the town why is there no bunting at the harbour and beaches?

“If we have Christmas lights in the town. Why are there no Christmas lights at the harbour? It should all join up. It would provide a great experience for people walking from the town centre to the harbour.”
