People woke up to a surprise in Newquay as parts of the town were covered by a light sprinkling of snow.

Although it wasn't enough to make a snowman for many children it was the first time they had seen snow as it rarely settles in the town.

A number of schools allowed the children to enjoy the snow.

A spokesperson for Newquay Primary Academy said: "Snow doesn’t happen often in Newquay.

"The Joshua class enjoyed having a snowy playtime.

"They had lots of fun having snowball fights and exploring with their friends."

Trenance Gardens was looking even more picturesque and parts of the Boating Lake were frozen over.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for ice and snow for Cornwall for Wednesday and Thursday

It stated ice and snow showers could lead to some difficult travel conditions on Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the Kernow Weather Team said: "These scattered snow showers are coming down from the north.

"These are falling heavy in places and leaving a light dusting.

"If you are out travelling, please do take extra care as road conditions could become unpredictable.

"Some places are dry with sunshine.

"It's actually a beautiful day."
