Penzance celebrated the switch on of its Christmas lights on Saturday.

The event was hosted by town crier Philip Northcott and Penzance councillor Stephen Reynolds, who gave a short speech before switching on the lights to the cheers of the crowd.

Santa Claus also made an appearance much to the joy of the children present.

Adding to the day’s festivities were music performances from Bec Applebee, Martin Skewes, True Foxes, Out of the Woods and DJ JoshFace.

A spokesperson said: ‘This year’s theme is A Cornish Christmas Nadelik Kerneweek and there are lots of events and entertainment planned to get you in the Christmas mood and support Penzance businesses.’

The all-day Christmas Market took place at St John’s Hall where people could browse an array of local foods, gifts and artisan stalls to find that perfect Christmas gift.

The market will be back on Saturday, December 16 on the day that the Humphry Davy Lantern Parade takes place.
