Drivers in Cornwall are advised to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys ahead of a weekend closure of the A30 for the removal of a roundabout.
To carry out the work, as part of National Highways’ A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross upgrade, the A30 will be closed between Chiverton and the Boxheater junction from 8pm on Friday, 10 March to 6am on Monday, 13 March.
The closure will enable the removal of the temporary roundabout at Chybucca and installation of a new signal-controlled junction, which will see traffic switched onto a section of the new A30 carriageway.
The diversion will follow a similar route to the one in place for the recent Tolgroggan bridge lift, with eastbound traffic diverted via the A3075 to Goonhavern and the B3285 to rejoin the A30, and the westbound diversion operating in reverse.
In the meantime, the A30 will be fully closed between the Chiverton and Carland Cross roundabouts during weeknights next week for essential construction work, including earthworks at Tolgroggan and utility and resurfacing work at Chiverton.
During the overnight 8pm to 6am closures, from Monday, 6 March to Friday, 10 March, diversions will be in place via the A3075, A3058 and A3076.
The scheme will become more noticeable through the year as construction progresses to align the new A30 carriageway.
And Neil Winter, National Highways’ Senior Project Manager for the A30 scheme, said: “People will see the project take more shape this year and there’s a lot of planning and work going into avoiding the impact on holiday periods and keeping traffic moving while construction progresses.
“The closures are required to progress alignment of the new A30 route, we appreciate roadworks can be frustrating, but to keep disruption to an absolute minimum, we’re carrying out as much of the work overnight as possible when traffic levels are lower.
“We’re communicating the closures to local communities and ensuring access is maintained for residents and businesses. We thank people in advance for their co-operation and patience, and in the meantime we advise drivers to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys during this work.”
During the weekend closure, drivers can obtain up-to-the-minute travel information on local radio, the @HighwaysSWEST Twitter feed, by phoning the National Highways Information Line on 0300 123 5000 or by accessing the website: www.trafficengland.com
The new A30 carriageway is scheduled to open late this year, further information is available at National Highways’ A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross web page and for more details on National Highways’ work in the South West go to https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-work/south-west/
The cost of developing the scheme is being partly funded by an £8 million contribution from the European Regional Development Fund, with an additional £12 million for the construction phase. The remainder of the cost of developing and delivering the scheme is being funded by central Government.
