ORGANISERS of the Golowan Festival has announced the launch of two new additions to add to its Mazey weekend on June 28 and 29.

New to the Penzance festival will be the Mazey Weekend area at Penlee Park. Two fields will be filled with entertainment and activities for all ages, along with food stalls, a bar, coffee, inflatables, craft stalls and a new tree lounge hang out space for young people.

Festival organisers have also announced the introduction of the Golowan Mini-Sea Shanty Festival. The event, which takes place on Quay Fair Day (June 29) at the Penzance Dry Dock, is for those who fancy the spectacle of men bellowing wild songs with plenty of embellishments and choruses sung with gusto.

The theme for this year’s heritage and community street festival is ‘On the Crest of a Wave’, which gives a nod to the power of the Cornish coast and seas.

Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds said: “Golowan is a festival like no other, and I’m proud that Penzance Council is once again supporting the amazing team at Golowan CIC and the dedicated band of volunteers who make it happen. This year’s theme chimes perfectly with the burgeoning ‘Penzance Renaissance’, and I have every faith that Golowan will continue riding the wave of success for years to come.”

Despite potential difficulties with the Coinagehall development work close to Golowan’s footprint, the Quay fair will remain in its popular location on Battery Road in front of the Jubilee Pool, while the Golowan Marquee breaks new ground by moving to a new site, the Wharfside Maritime Car Park by the harbour.

Thursday, June 26 sees the annual vote for the ’Mock Mayor of the Quay’ in the Golowan Marquee, which is hosted by the Cornish Crown Brewery, with their line-up of performances running through to June 29.

The ‘Golowan Fireworks Display’, which takes place on Friday, June 27, will see Penglaz make an appearance accompanied by the Golowan Band leading the Serpent Dance. It will snake along Coinagehall and wind its way around the streets in celebration of Midsummer and the Feast of St John.

Mazey Day on Saturday, June 28 sees the mayor and mock mayor address the crowds from the Mayors’ Platform followed by the 11am, 1pm, and 3pm parades where hundreds of participants from schools and community groups showcase their giant wicker models to the tune of marching bands.

There will be street music, stages, markets, food stalls, theatre and dance, while the Greenmarket Car Park will host the street food stalls and musical acts will fill the Folk Stage. We have the fair with rides and attractions to light up the harbourside from Wednesday through to Quay Fair Day.

Quay Fair Day on Sunday, June 29 sees the action move to the harbourside. The Quay market accompanies the Golowan Folk Stage, street entertainment, dancing, and the youth music stage will be in full swing in Penlee Park.

The Golowan Marquee in the Harbourside car park will host a star-studded cavalcade of music with entertainment throughout the weekend.
