LOCAL historian, photograph collector and Voice reader Barrie Doney has no shortage of pictures and stories from Cornwall’s past, which he shares with Voice Newspaper readers every week.

This week’s photograph takes us back to a famous son of Gulval.

Barrie says of this photograph: “Dudley Savage MBE. Born 1920 at Gulval, he was taught to play the piano at an early age and then the organ by his mother in the local chapel. He then progressed to the Truro Cathedral organ. before going on to become an organist playing all over the UK and Europe.

“He had a weekly request radio show on the organ at the Royal/ABC Cinema in Plymouth called As Prescribed.

“The cinema is now on the market and hoping to be bought by a local group to re-open it. His wife died in 2003 and he in 2008 in a care home in Liskeard near to where they lived.”
