THE Cornwall councillor for central Newquay says there are no plans for a resident’s parking to be introduced throughout the town.
Cllr Joanna Kenny believes the unitary authority will not be bringing in ‘residents only zones’ due to cost implications.
She is keen for residents parking to be brought in at Trebarwith Crescent where local residents have difficulty parking near their homes.
The ‘Residents Parking for Newquay’ group was formed as residents believe there is “no coherent” plan in place to manage the traffic entering the town.
The group argues the measure would free up spaces for people who live in the area and stop shoppers, workers and surfers from taking up all the spaces.
They called for Cornwall Council to launch a public consultation so that a resident’s parking scheme could be put in place as soon as possible if the result was overwhelmingly in favour of change but that will now not be happening.
A full review of on street parking in Newquay was last done back in 2017 when residents rejected the idea of residents parking.
The issue was discussed at Newquay Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, August 6.
Cllr Kenny said: “Regarding resident’s parking schemes we local members have met with the relevant management to discuss resident parking in Newquay.
“It seems clear resident’s parking is not on the cards, but I will continue to pursue a local scheme for Trebarwith Crescent along the lines of the successful Ennor’s Road scheme, which has been long promised.
“We would have to start with a survey and post it out.”
Cllr Steve Slade, who lives in Trebarwith Crescent, believes if only his road was included in a residents parking scheme it will have a knock-on effect on surrounding residential roads.
He said: “The town was promised by the previous administration a town wide resident’s parking survey because if you do residents parking in one area it just pushes the problem to the next area. Is that off the cards now?”
Cllr Kenny said: “Judging by the money they are talking about yes. What happens at Trebarwith Crescent is you get people trying to get to the sea. They don’t want to park in the car parks.
“Ennors Road residents parking was about people parking who were working in Newquay. It’s worked. Residents with a parking permit can normally find a parking place in their own street. The people who are working must be going somewhere but it doesn’t appear to be creating problems elsewhere.”
Cllr Slade said: “As a resident of Trebarwith Crescent I can assure you that people who work in the high street also use it as a car park, so it isn’t just people going to the sea.”
