ROAD workers have been praised after helping storm-blown shoppers in Newquay.
A Cormac team working on the Cliff Road Mid Cornwall Metro project stepped in to help people stay safe as powerful winds created dangerous conditions around the Aldi area during Storm Austen.
Many people being buffeted by the high winds were finding it difficult to stay on their feet in the area, which becomes a notorious wind funnel during stormy weather.
A spokesperson for Cormac said: “Recognising the risks posed by the severe gusts, the team assisted members of the public, offered advice on safer routes, and helped people struggling to cross the car park and nearby footways.

“We recently received a message from a visitor to Newquay thanking the team for their kindness and quick thinking, describing them as a credit to Cormac.
“A huge well done to the team for looking out for the community when it mattered most. Their efforts were also spotted by local residents, which attracted comments including top attitude, spreading some morale on a winter's day as well as credit to Cormac and society.”
