PLANS for a new £5-million council hub in Newquay have been unveiled.

Cornwall Council propose to construct a purpose built building on its Lanherne site used by Adult Education and previously occupied by Newquay Club for the Disabled.

The current buildings would be demolished to make way for the new hub which will cater for multiple services including the Family Hub, Child Development Centre, Safe and Well, Contact Centre, Adult Education, Registrars, as well as providing space for Cornwall Council staff to work and meet.

The development will be part of a wider masterplan for the site and the project will have a role in the regeneration and revitalisation of the Station Quarter area.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “As an organisation Cornwall Council is looking to do something different with the buildings we deliver services from.

“We want to create a single space for our customers to access multiple services and meet the needs of the local community.

“A review of Newquay and the surrounding area has been carried out and, after considering various options, we have decided to build a new Service Hub as part of the Station Hill redevelopment.

“The chosen site in Newquay is off Tolcarne Road, and is currently occupied by Lanherne House, which is used by Adult Education and a two-storey derelict building.

“The current buildings will be demolished and the new hub will cater for multiple services.

“We know that the needs of our communities, and the way in which they want to access our buildings have changed, and we want to change with them.”

The council proposes to have three main centres in Bodmin, Truro and Camborne with smaller centres in other towns to deliver council services.

Newquay Trenance Cornwall councillor Olly Monk said: “I’m really pleased that the Hub has reached the planning stage.

“This scheme has been eight years in the making and this milestone brings delivery a step closer.

“Having all the services under one roof in a modern purposed built facility will provide more efficient delivery of services for the people of Newquay.”

Newquay central Cornwall councillor Louis Gardner says the Newquay council hub project demonstrates that Cornwall Council believes the town has a strategic part to play in the Duchy in the future.
