NEWQUAY was buzzing during Boardmasters as festivalgoers descended on the town to attend the music and surf festival.

Newquay BID says early indications are showing businesses in the town centre received a welcome bonanza from the influx of visitors.

The organisation launched a Beyond Masters campaign to attract people into the town centre, which included the Killacourt Garden Party. The inaugural event featured live bands, DJ's and street-food and attracted lots of visitors.

More than 50,000 daily attendees gathered at the festival site at Watergate Bay to watch the music lineup featuring headliners Fatboy Slim, Lily Allen and Kasabian. Other acts that attracted huge crowds included Kooks, Nia Archives, Pendulum and Dizzee Rascal.

Fistral was packed with visitors to watch the Boardmasters YETI Pro QS 4,000. Perranporth surfer Lukas Skinner was denied a historic third successive Boardmasters Open title. He led the final early but Sam Piter from France overtook him in the final minutes to claim the title. Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri from the Basque Country won the women’s shortboard title.

The WAX Fistral Garden Party featured the skate demonstrations and competition, which was won by Alex Halford.

Newquay BID manager Mark Warren said: “Overall, the early signs are very positive.

“The initial feedback suggests the Beyond Boardmasters campaign is beginning to have a positive impact and that the town centre benefited from increased visitor confidence over the festival weekend. There were some standout success stories. Two businesses told me they recorded their highest-ever single day of sales on Saturday

“There is still work to do around the evening economy, as footfall naturally reduces later in the day, and we'd like to see more visitors staying in town to support our bars, restaurants and hospitality businesses.

“The Boardmasters road closures also appeared to work extremely well again this year, with no significant disruption reported within the town centre.”
