A Newquay artist is displaying his work as part of a major exhibition about climate change.
Mike Young is showcasing two of his artworks for the Gaia Earth artwork exhibition at Truro Cathedral, which is touring the country to communicate a sense of the fragility of the planet.
Mike was selected to exhibit his artwork by the art group called ‘In it Together’, which is accompanying the Gaia installation to open conversations about climate change and the environment.
One of Mike’s artworks is titled ‘Octopus’ and aims to create awareness about the whales and dolphins being killed in the Faroe Islands and the other artwork is called ‘Born in Slavery’.
Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter, Gaia features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface.
The artwork provides the opportunity to see Earth on this scale, floating in three dimensions.
Mike, who owns Escape Surf School, said: “I’m honoured and proud to be invited to exhibit my art as a supporting artist with the art group In it together.
“Our art is supporting the main attraction the Gaia installation by artist Luke Jerram.
“The combined exhibition theme is about climate change and the ever-changing world.
“I put in two pieces of art for the exhibition.
“One is called Born in Slavery, the signs of the times and the other is Octopus, which is a symbol of senseless killing of whales and dolphins in the Faroe Islands and creating awareness of what’s going on.
“This artwork was created to support for the charity Captain Paul Watson Foundation UK, which was formerly Sea Shepherd UK, and aims to take direct action to protect all marine life. “I am just really happy to be part of such a positive movement and to display my art in such a beautiful space alongside so many other amazing artists.”
The exhibition is being held at Truro Cathedral until October 28.
Meanwhile Newquay production company Panda is helping to stage the Underworld silent disco at Truro Cathedral under the Gaia in aid of the Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust Charity on Friday, October 27 at 6.30pm.
