CAMPAIGNER’S calls for new pedestrian crossings in Newquay could receive the green light.

Residents have urged authorities to install a safe crossing at Tower Road and along the Gannel Link Road near the bottom of Tregunnel Hill.

Newquay Town Council is considering submitting the proposals for potential funding from the Saints Coast Community Area Partnership highways scheme, which aims to tackle issues that matter to communities.

Local transport funding allocated to the Saints Community Area Partnerships is about £85,000 a year for the next three years, which is shared across the whole of the partnership area that includes Newquay, St Columb, St Agnes, St Newlyn East, Crantock, Cubert, St Mawgan and Porthtowan.

Expressions of interest, which need to be submitted by February 27, 2026, can be made for each Cornwall councillor in the Community Area Partnership and one for each town and parish council. A parking and highways working party at Newquay Town Council is due to make a recommendation for the authority’s submission. The issue was discussed at Newquay Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, December 3.

Councillor Joanna Kenny said: “Currently I’m inclined to submit a scheme for the long needed crossing across Tower Road providing both safe access to the Spar and particularly for our young families to the Atlantic Road playground. I have a lot of requests from the Crantock Street area trying to cross there.

“We haven’t got to rush this. We have got until the end of February so I’m open to other ideas.”

Mayor Cllr Drew Creek said: “The Gannel link road crossing was a request by residents with young children who walk them to school and find the Gannel Link Road challenging and unsafe to cross. They do what they can by walking as a group, but the road is fast and so they want a safe crossing point.”
