A LONG-awaited new council hub which aims to help revitalise St Austell town centre is now up and running.

Cornwall Council has opened the Chi Austel service hub in what were empty retail units at the White River Place shopping centre.

Work started on transforming the former shops in the summer of last year and at the time it was hoped the hub would open in the late-spring of this year.

People will be able to access a number of services at the hub and council staff will be based in offices there.

The council hopes the new hub will help to increase footfall in the town centre and support the retail economy.

A council spokesperson said: “Chi Austel is a vibrant new service hub in the heart of White River Place. It’s part of a wider initiative to bring services closer to the community, provide fit-for-purpose offices and breathe new life into our town centres.

“We’ve transformed vacant units into a welcoming multi-purpose hub that brings together key services under one roof.

“Inside you’ll find a friendly, spacious family hub and a beautifully-designed ceremony room for weddings and registrations.

“Chi Austel is more than just a building, it’s a place where people can connect, access support and celebrate important life moments.

“We’re proud to be opening the doors to the public on the afternoon of Thursday, September 18, between 2pm and 4pm, for our open day. Come and explore areas open to the public, meet the teams and discover what Chi Austel has to offer.
