CHILDREN’S Sailing Trust (CST) announced a change in leadership as long-standing chair of trustees Martin Barlow steps down after five years at the helm.
Following a unanimous vote by the board, current trustee James Staughton OBE DL has been appointed as the new chair, effective from June 2025 after a three-month handover period.
Martin Barlow has been a dedicated member of CST for many years, initially as a parent sailing coordinator for Mawnan Smith School, then as a trustee, and most recently as chair.
Under his leadership, CST has expanded and opened up life-changing opportunities on the water for hundreds of children, including those with additional needs. Martin will continue to support the trust during the transition, and chaired his final management committee meeting on June 10.
CEO Jakie Jewell said: “We are incredibly grateful to Martin for his years of passionate service and steady leadership. His legacy will continue to shape our future, and we look forward to building on that foundation with James.”
As a respected business leader and community figure in Cornwall, James brings with him a wealth of experience.
Formerly chief executive of St Austell Brewery and its honorary president for the past five years, James has played a pivotal role in regional economic development and sustainability initiatives.
A deputy lieutenant of Cornwall, he also chairs the Cornwall place board and is a passionate advocate for the county’s cultural identity.
Speaking about his new role, James said: “I am honoured to take on the position of Chair of Trustees for Children’s Sailing Trust. The work CST does to support young people through access to sailing and watersports - particularly those with limited opportunities - is inspirational. I look forward to supporting the team in expanding this vital mission.”
