At last week’s full council meeting, we were delighted to welcome seven fantastic applicants for the three vacant volunteer councillor roles. It was a privilege to chair the meeting and hear from each candidate about their passion for serving Newquay—a commitment I’ve been proud to share for the past four years.
We were truly impressed by the diverse backgrounds, skills, and dedication shown by all applicants—it was a testament to the strength of our community. After careful consideration, the council voted to appoint our three newest members councillor Kattaliya Norman, councillor Rebecca Wilton and councillor Justine Taylor.
They’ll be joining us in the coming weeks, and I’m thrilled to welcome them to our hardworking team. Together, we’ll continue striving to make Newquay an even better place to live, work, and visit. A huge thank you to everyone who stepped forward to serve—your enthusiasm and love for our town is inspiring.
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Clive this week—a familiar and much-loved face in our town centre. Many of you will remember him sitting on Bank Street, near Barclays and Trepass, watching the world go by and sharing chats with passersby. To my family and me, Clive was a kind and constant presence during our daily work and school routines.
He always had a warm word for my children, my wife, and myself, and his gentle nature made those small interactions something we’ll truly miss. While I never knew the full story behind Clive’s tattoos or the life journeys that brought him to our streets, I can’t help but wish I’d taken more time to listen.
His absence leaves a quiet space in the rhythm of our town, and it’s been moving to see so many share tributes and memories online, as well as the touching memorial placed where he once sat. I understand details of Clive’s funeral will be shared soon, giving those who knew him a chance to pay their respects. For now, let’s remember the quiet impact he had on our community—proof that even the briefest connections can leave lasting marks. Rest in peace, Clive. You’ll be missed.
Better week of weather ahead. Settled into the weekend with a bit of sunshine. Tomorrow (Thursday) from 5pm until 8 pm, in Rowing Club, it’s the 60 th anniversary of the RNLI in harbour . Any past crew, committee, volunteers, or any past or present connection, most welcome for chat, bring any photos you may have. Maybe a pint as well. This Saturday Rythmn Hepcats are at the Rowing Club at 9pm.
Thought for the Week: “The darkest nights, bring the brightest stars.”
