NEWQUAY’S mayor is keen for a townwide resident’s parking public consultation to be carried out.
Cllr Drew Creek believes it is important for resident’s views to be heard as “a lot” has changed since the last survey was held in 2017 such as more people now working from home.
The Residents Parking for Newquay Group was formed as residents believe there is “no coherent” plan in place to manage the traffic entering the town.
The group argues the measure would free up spaces for people who live in the area and stop shoppers, workers and surfers from taking up all the spaces.
They called for Cornwall Council to launch a public consultation so that a resident’s parking scheme could be put in place as soon as possible if the result was overwhelmingly in favour of change.
Newquay Central Cornwall councillor Joanna Kenny believes the unitary authority will not be bringing in ‘residents only zones’ due to cost implications.
She is keen for residents parking to be brought in at Trebarwith Crescent where local residents have difficulty parking near their homes.
Cllr Creek aired his views on resident’s parking at Newquay Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, October 1.
He said: “I’m still really keen to see a resident’s parking scheme explored. If only a parking consultation across the whole of the town because so much has changed since the last one.
“Whether we agree or not there needs to be a residents parking scheme what we do know if people’s behaviours have changed in terms of people living in a single property and in terms of the number of people working from home.
“The last resident’s parking consultation was in 2017, which was very much before the advent of work from home.”
