TRURO MP Jayne Kirkham was put through her paces on National Fitness Day 2025 at Truro Leisure Centre.

The MP tried out gym equipment and watched an aqua fit class on Wednesday (September 24) as part of the event, which saw free sessions including Pilates and yoga offered in a bid to get more people signing up for a healthier lifestyle.

Operating under the Better brand, GLL is a not-for-profit social enterprise operating nine leisure centres in Cornwall on behalf of the council. James Curry, GLL Head of Service in Cornwall, welcomed local Ms Kirkham to Truro Leisure Centre.

“Jayne is clearly a strong advocate for ensuring some of the £400m announced in the government spending review for grassroot sport finds its way into Cornwall and in particular swimming pools,” he said.

“She was particularly keen to understand the challenges around school swimming, the transport network, the impact of A30 works, National Insurance changes and cost pressures, as well as reaffirming her commitment to supporting the health prevention agenda and switching NHS funding down this pathway as part of the 10-year plan.”

National Fitness Day was coordinated by ukactive, the UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector. The campaign highlights the importance of getting active and making steps towards a healthier lifestyle for physical and mental wellbeing. Activities took place not only in sports facilities, but also in workplaces, schools and hospitals.

Ukactive CEO Huw Edwards said: “Gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres are the driving force behind getting the nation moving, and it is great to see MPs supporting the campaign and acknowledging the importance of these facilities and services in creating a healthier, happier nation.”
