THE MP for Truro and Falmouth was put through her paces on National Fitness Day 2025 at Truro Leisure Centre.

Labour MP Jayne Kirkham tried out gym equipment and watched an aqua fit class on Wednesday [September 24] as part of the event, which saw free sessions including Pilates and yoga offered in a bid to get more people signing up for a healthier lifestyle.

“It was good to get to meet the fantastic team at Truro Leisure Centre and show the skills I've been building from using my electric bike,” said Ms Kirkham. “I'm keen we keep our pools and sports centres for our health and wellbeing, and this one is perfectly placed for Truro, the college and the hospital. It has plans for growth and has what I think is now the only public pool in the constituency.

“I’m campaigning for more support for our sports centres from national and local government, as well as in partnership with the sector, and a new pool for Falmouth to replace the one we lost - please check my website to sign my petition.”

GLL is a not-for-profit social enterprise operating nine leisure centres in Cornwall under the Better brand on behalf of Cornwall Council. James Curry, GLL head of service in Cornwall, said: “Jayne is clearly a strong advocate for ensuring some of the £400-million announced in the government spending review for grassroots sport finds its way into Cornwall and in particular swimming pools.

“She was especially keen to understand the challenges around school swimming, the transport network, the impact of A30 works, National Insurance changes and cost pressures, as well as reaffirming her commitment to supporting the health prevention agenda and switching NHS funding down this pathway as part of the 10-year plan.”

National Fitness Day was coordinated by ukactive, the UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector.
