The winners at an annual quiz held in Newquay were various local good causes after hundreds of pounds was raised.

Nineteen teams representing various local good causes and charities took part in the Brains of Newquay Charity Quiz run by Towan Blystra Lion at Newquay Golf Club.

The winners were The Flukes team, which was made up of Mike Taylor, Terry Carne, Ian Bonham and Jenny Simpson, who scooped £400 for Newquay Marine Group.

Only one point behind them were last year’s winners, Newquay Road Runners ‘Precocious Penguins’ who quizzed for the Newquay Harbour Sports Association and raised £300 in total for that cause.

Coming third, after a tie-break with Newquay Rotary’s ‘Round To It’ team, were ‘The Bloomers’ who won a total of £200 for Newquay in Bloom.

Three other teams won £100 each for winning ‘rounds’ in the quiz, which were Lusty Crusties in aid of Lusty Surf Life Saving Club, Wides, Byes and No Balls raising money for Newquay Cricket Club and The Cormorants for Newquay Cormorants Amateur Swimming Club).

But there were no losers in this charity give-away evening with all remaining teams winning £50 for their causes which were: Age UK’s Govenek Hub, The Storehouse, Chylowen Alpacas (CHAT), RNLI, St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust, Trenance Cottages, Motor Neuron Disease Cornwall Branch, Cornwall Accessibility, Children’s Hospice SW, Cornwall Hospice Care, NSPCC, DISC and the Friends of Indian Queens School.

Lion’s vice president, Jon Collins thanked everyone who had attended and Newquay Golf Club steward, Alex, who set many of the questions and made sure everyone was kept supplied with refreshment. He also thanked quizmaster Lion Carl Leadbetter for all the effort he had put in to preparing for, and compering the evening.

“Our main fund raising event of the year in Newquay Beer Festival,” said Jon, “and this quiz is just one of the ways we look to get that money back into the community through groups that do so many important and, often unsung, activities in our area.

“It is great to see so many people helping them by taking part in events like the Brains of Newquay and I’m sure we’ll be back again in 2024.”
