Four Newquay lifeguards have been commended for their achievements.

RNLI chief executive Mark Dowie presented 20-year service medals at Crantock Beach to John Steadman and Andy Thomas and a 20-year service certificate to Greg Spray.

Harry Barea was recognised for his efforts in helping to rescue 69 people from floodwaters whilst lifeguarding in New Zealand last winter.

Lead lifeguard supervisor Lewis Timson said: “I would like to congratulate the recipients of these prestigious awards.

“They are a credit to the RNLI Newquay Lifeguard service and we are very proud of them.

“Our peak season staffing levels ended on Sunday at Lusty Glaze and at South Fistral.

“All our other beaches will remain open.”

Beach-goers are urged to use beaches that are patrolled by lifeguards and to swim between the yellow and red flags placed by lifeguards.
