THE Huer’s Hut was illuminated red on Monday to help challenge the misconceptions that still surround HIV.
Newquay Lions Club lit up the iconic structure on behalf of the Eddystone Trust to mark World Aids Day.
A spokesperson for the Eddystone Trust said: “World AIDS Day is an internationally recognised event dedicated to remembering those we have lost, showing support for people living with HIV, and raising awareness to challenge stigma.
“Despite significant progress in treatment and prevention, HIV remains a public health issue in the South West.
“According to the UK Health Security Agency, over 100,000 people in the UK are currently living with HIV – and around 4,400 of these remain undiagnosed, meaning they are unaware of their status.
“Early diagnosis and treatment allow people to live long, healthy lives, but stigma still prevents many from coming forward for testing and support.
“By lighting the Huer’s Hut red, it has made a powerful statement of solidarity – not only with people living with HIV but also with the global movement towards ending HIV transmissions by 2030. Such a visible gesture has helped spark conversations, raise awareness, and help challenge the misconceptions that still surround HIV today.”
