A business that converts old railway carriages for holidaymakers to stay in has won a green award.

Railholiday, based in St Germans, triumphed in the Most Sustainable Small Business category in this year’s Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

The family business, run by Dave and Lizzy Stroud, provides self-catering holiday accommodation beside the Cornwall mainline at St Germans and Hayle.

Dave said: “This year is our 25th anniversary of letting carriages, so this is a great way to celebrate our silver jubilee. Sustainability has always been at the heart of all we do; from restoring our carriages using wood from our own woodland, to gardening for optimum wildlife benefit or immersing ourselves in community actions.

“The Cornwall Sustainability Awards are a great force for good. We’d like to thank the organisers and judges for all their hard work.

“We also want to encourage communication; to spread the word that being green is not only good for the planet, but also the soul. When sustainability becomes the norm, then we will all be winners.”

Lizzy Stroud is also an environmental campaigner and writes a column for the Voice.
