A book borrowed from Penzance Library in 1980 has finally made its way home - 45 years after it was loaned out.
Music Notation, by Gardner Read, was loaned out from Penzance Library and according to its record card, was due to be returned by March 25, 1980.
It was eventually handed into St Ives Library in November, 2025 – just 45 years late. This is just one of the books returned to libraries across the Duchy anonymously during the November Book Amnesty, where borrowers were encouraged to return books they had forgotten to bring back over the years.
The books will once again rejoin Cornwall Libraries stock so they can be enjoyed by other library users.
Cornwall’s libraries are fine-free all year round and will always welcome returning members, no matter how long it’s been.
Councillor Sarah Preece, cabinet member with responsibility for libraries and culture at Cornwall Council, said: “It’s wonderful that books like this one have been returned to the library service for other people to enjoy.
“If you have forgotten to return books, whether it’s been months, years or decades, we’ll be glad to have them back, and to see you as well.
“Our libraries are welcoming, safe spaces. If you have overdue books, you don’t need to be worried or feel embarrassed. There won’t be any fines, or fuss - we just ask that you return your books when you can.”
Cornwall Libraries offer thousands of books and digital resources like free eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines and eNewpapers, as well as holding plenty of activities and events. Cornwall Council provides books, IT services and online resources to all libraries across the Duchy through the Cornwall Library Service.
