Since the announcement that Cornwall Council was considering redeveloping its main St Austell office complex into housing, many councillors, former councillors and council workers wondered what would happen to the treasure trove of donated items that used to adorn the foyer of the chambers at the Penwinnick Road site.

These artefacts had been accumulated over decades from visiting dignitaries, charity and forces representatives as well as mayors who left objects and paintings behind when they vacated office.

Amongst the treasures are a ceremonial dress sword, three antique solid oak thrones, a ship’s bell presented in 1978 by HMS Avenger, ceremonial hats and gowns and plaques, photographs, books and paintings. The items are now safely installed at the offices of St Austell Town Council at nearby Pondhu Stable Block.

Town clerk David Pooley, pictured with deputy town clerk Sara Gwilliams, said: “The items removed from Cornwall Council’s offices were transferred from Restormel Borough Council to St Austell Town Council in 2009 but remained on display in the chamber.

“Some of the pieces are beautiful and represent a deep history of St Austell and will be preserved by St Austell Town Council. The last item to be removed and relocated is the stone trough outside the front doors.

“The town council is awaiting an update from Cornwall Council on plans for the former Restormel Borough Offices site which was built in the 1970s.”
