A CAMPAIGN to raise money for urgent repairs to an historic harbour at a Cornish village has been hailed a success.

Around £120,000 is now in place to pay for remedial works to a quay, dating from 1886, at Gorran Haven near St Austell.

The Quay to the Village appeal has been run by the Gorran Haven Harbour Trust after storm damage to the quay.

In the summer, the trust appealed to local people, businesses, second homeowners and tourists to help raise around £60,000 to add to existing funds to pay for repairs that would prevent the end of the stone quay falling away and leaving boats, buildings and moorings exposed to the sea.

Trust chairman Geoff Fox said the fundraising target had been reached “due to the herculean efforts and magnificent generosity of the local community and the extended ‘Gorran Haven family’”.

He said: “It has been a huge project embracing numerous creative fundraising initiatives, involving much time, skill and energy. But it has also been an inspiration to work with talented contributors, both local and from ‘upcountry’, who have invested immeasurable time and expertise in supporting and publicising the whole project.

“From an artistic girl who sold painted pebbles to concerned individuals who have personally contributed significant sums of money; from local groups and clubs to special events and performances; we are amazed at your generosity, initiative and dedication.

“While the Gorran Haven Harbour Trust has been tasked with managing the quay, it really belongs to the community. It would be traumatic for us to even try and imagine the village without it. The focal point of the village may be the quay, but the heart of the village is its community. In this crowdfunding campaign, both the heart and the focal point have come together.”

Phased works will be undertaken at the harbour.
