TWO fundraising evenings held in St Austell in aid of the flooding disaster in Nepal raised more than £2,500. 

The Gurkha Restaurant brought together people to support those affected by the devastating floods and landslides. 

Among those attending were Noah Law, the MP for St Austell and Newquay, and St Austell mayor Cllr Ethan Stephens, alongside members of the local community and supporters of the Nepalese community in Cornwall. 

The evenings raised funds for the Nepalese Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. 

Restaurant owner Raj Sedhai said: “We are so thankful that so many people came to show their support. We were proud to host our MP and local mayor.” 

Kernow Soroptimists organised a raffle on the first of the evenings, raising more than £500, thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals who donated prizes and bought tickets. A raffle on the second evening organised by the restaurant brought the raffles total to £783.73. 

Jennie Walker of Kernow Soroptimists said: “Together we can show Nepal that Cornwall cares. Kernow Soroptimists would like to thank everyone who supported the raffle, donated prizes, bought tickets or attended the event, as well as the businesses whose generosity helped make the raffle such a success. 

“The full amount raised by these evenings came to £2575.73, and the organisers are delighted with the response and the generosity shown by everyone who attended. 

“The events were hosted by restaurant owners Raj and Asmita Sedhai, who welcomed guests with their customary warmth and generosity. 

“A particular thank you goes to Raj and Asmita and the whole team at the Gurkha Restaurant for being such wonderful hosts and for bringing the community together for this important cause. 

“Both evenings were a wonderful demonstration of the generosity of the people of St Austell and the strong friendship between Cornwall and the Nepalese community.”
