FEARS have been raised faded double yellow lines in Newquay are putting people’s lives at risk.

Residents and businesses have complained motorists are taking advantage of Cornwall Council civil enforcement officers not issuing penalty charge notices where the parking restriction is not fully in place.

They are worried an ambulance or a fire engine would not be able to drive through Wesley Yard in an emergency due to motorists parking inappropriately where the double yellow lines have faded.

Resident Richard Curtis said: “The length of the double yellow lines have disappeared along Wesley Yard so people park there.

“There will be a real emergency one of these days and an ambulance or fire engine will not be able to get through. You could barely fit a car through. Vehicles need to do a three point turn at times to get around.

“People do treat the road as a car park. The problem is there is no resident’s parking. The resident’s parking along Ennor’s Road was a great success and the council should have rolled it out across the town, but they haven’t done that.

“It’s so frustrating. The double yellow lines there for a reason. They were not just painted on for the sake of it.

Gillan Pope, the owner of Project Eighty Three in Wesley Yard, added: “It is nice for people to park up and grab food and coffee but there should be double yellow lines for safety reasons. Not having so many vehicles parked along the road would be a good thing.

“There was a car fire on June 13 and luckily there were no vehicles parked there so the fire engine was able to get down here.

“An ambulance wouldn’t be able to get around the corner if there were vehicles parked there. They would have to try and get through by coming all the way around. If someone was having a heart attack, then they would lose vital time.

“We can’t open our gates at times because people park in front of them. They know traffic wardens don’t come down here.”

Newquay Fire Station will be investigating the state of the parking at Wesley Yard to see if it’s an issue that needs sorting out.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve not attended any incidents there recently so we will be going out to see what the situation is. If there is an issue we will go from there.”

Newquay Central and Pentire Cornwall councillor Joanna Kenny stated there are several places in Newquay where there are faded double yellow lines, which includes Belmont Place.

Cllr Kenny said: “Any people think lines around town need repainting then let me know and I can pass it onto Cornwall Council.

“They will be put in a queue. There is only a small budget. It all comes down to need and safety.

“I don’t think it’s dangerous, but people are taking advantage of the double yellow lines and are parking inconveniently.

“People are parking along narrow roads and are not leaving enough room for fire engine vehicles to get through.”
