Prime Cattle
Yet another numerous and quality entry of Prime Cattle forward selling on an equally strong trade.
Top honours away to the best Limousin steer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 408p/kg (£2,558), with her 620kg Limousin also topping the heifers at 403p/kg (£2,499) and a 627kg Limousin heifer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 390p/kg (£2,445).
A run of good Herefords forward from Mr J M Venning of St Stephen, St Austell all looked well sold with steer prices at 360p/kg (£2,570) and 355p/kg (£2,538) and heifer prices at 360p/kg (£2,340), 355p/kg (£2,535), 342p/kg (£2,202) and 340p/kg (£2,013).
A pair of strong Angus steers from Messrs K P & A Sowden of Constantine, Falmouth traded at 359p/kg (£2,535) and 356p/kg (£2,524) and heavy Herefords in from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay saw a good trade with the best heifer at 355p/kg (£2,293) and best steer at 328p/kg (£2,680).
The best heifer from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro made 346p/kg with other good cattle forward too numerous to mention.
Cull Cows
A good entry of cull animals to report being topped at 315p/kg by a Friesian heifer from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston, followed by a Limousin cow from Messrs E J Benney & Partners of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth at 310p/kg (£2,747) and a Limousin cow from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 308p/kg.
A Friesian heifer from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro went under the hammer at 302p/kg, with a Blonde cow from Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay one bid behind at 301p/kg and a Limousin cow from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro one bid behind that at 300p/kg.
Another Friesian heifer from Mr Heller went through the ring at 295p/kg and a good Charolais cow and a Limousin cow, both from Messrs Benney, were tied next at 288p/kg.
Store Cattle
A reasonable entry in this week, selling on a good trade though fewer close to finish types resulting in slightly lower top prices.
Steers topping at £1790 for a cracking bunch of 6 2- year-old Herefords on behalf of Messrs J H & S M Dark & Sons of Mullion, Helston, followed by a pair of 19-month-old Aberdeen Angus steers at £1745 on behalf of Messrs E J & K S Andrew of Penryn.
A 21-month-old Blue steer from Messrs J A & J H Mann of Zennor realised £1720, whilst a pair of 22-month-old Angus from Mr J T Rowe of Camborne achieved £1655, with Mr Rowe going on to sell a 20-month-old Hereford to £1510.
The best of the younger steers selling to £1505 on behalf of Messrs J H & S M Dark & Sons, followed by Messrs W Marsh & Son of St Stephen, St Austell with their pair of 14-month-old Angus at £1210.
Heifers selling to £1705 on behalf of Fentongollan Farms of Tresillian, Truro for their single 22-month-old Shorthorn, followed by 5 22-month-old Blues from Messrs J A & J H Mann at £1590.
Smart South Devons to £1570 on behalf of James Eustice Farms of Wadebridge who also sold 16-month-old Angus to £1200, whilst South Devons from Messrs S & C Taffinder of Portscatho, Truro realised £1505.
Younger heifers selling to £1495 for a single 13-month-old Blue on behalf of Mr M J Williams of Constantine, Falmouth.
Rearing Calves
As in recent weeks the quality and stronger calves keenly sought after by a ring full of bidders, second quality and some very young calves a little more hard to place.
Best of the bull calves to £610 for a super young British Blue x sold by Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey who went on to sell his further nice British Blue x bulls for £580, £575, £570 twice, £560, £505 and £500 with their British Blue x heifers making £425 and £385 twice.
A young Simmental x bull looked well sold at £550 on behalf of Messrs L W & S Hosken from Tregowris, and the best of the Hereford x bulls to £505 for Messrs A & B Pascoe from North Country, Redruth.
Aberdeen Angus x bulls sold to £485 for Messrs Searle & Partners from Penzance who also sold their Aberdeen Angus x heifer for £290 and a young Limousin x bull sold well to make £480 for Messrs S Parker & Son from Callestick. Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden from Gunwalloe sold their best British Blue x bull for £485.
A few stronger weaned calves from 3 to 4 months old sold well to £630 for a British Blue x steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin from Manaccan who sold a further bunch of three British Blue x steers for £625 and a pair of British Blue x heifers making £540 each and Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden sold their British Blue x steer for £560 and their smart British Blue x heifer away at £600.
Prime Lambs
Numbers short, but more bite in the trade this week and improved averages.
The best pick of a consignment from Mr D J Tremain of St Columb topped at £159 for 52kg Charollais crosses, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. A pair of shapely 45kg lambs from Mrs B Chapman of St Columb set the premium at 330p/kg, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Cull Ewes
A very lively trade for the cull ewes this week, with more required to satisfy buyer demand.
Topping at £176 were a grand pen of Texels from for Mr N Phillips of Wadebridge. Further Texels and Texel x to £170 for Mrs B M Chapman of St Columb; £169 for Mr S Turriff of Truro; £165 again for Mr N Phillips and £148 for Mr T J Ham of Truro.
Suffolk and Suffolk x to £159 for Mr M Hill and for Mrs Chapman. Dorsets to £140 again for Mr Ham. Lleyn x to £134 for Mr B Bucknell of Newquay. 2T Sheep to £116 for a Suffolk x Mule from Mr C Johns of St Austell and £114 for Texels again from Mr Phillips.
Store Lambs
A light entry selling on a stand on trade and topping at £130 on behalf of Mr M Hill of Truro.
Mr S Turriff of Truro sold a strong pair of lambs to £120, whilst a pair from Mr J McFadden of Penzance achieved £115, with further lots from the same farm to £105 and £103. Longer term types trading between £60-£80 but fair demand for all.
