Prime Cattle

The roaring Truro Prime Cattle trade continues to outpace other South Western centres, with the all-round huge quality entry of a 53 bullocks all looking incredibly well sold.

An outstanding run of eight very well-finished and turned out Limousins from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston took the eight top prices with his heifers at 432p/kg (£2,700), 418p/kg (£2,863) and 398p/kg (£2,862) and his steer prices at 424p/kg (£3,099), 418p/kg twice (£2,893 & £2,943), 415p/kg (£2,797) and 404p/kg (£2,982).

Overall average across the consignment of 415.9p/kg and £2,892.30.

A run of quality cattle in from both Mr W J P Julian and Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay also saw a strong trade with their best Limousin steer and heifer tied at 395p/kg, another Limousin steer at 394p/kg and a pair of Limo heifers tied at 390p/kg.

Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro saw their best Limousin heifer away at 392p/kg (£2,352), followed by a pair of Limousin steers from Mrs V Gay of St Austell at 384p/kg (£2,511) and 381p/kg (£2,438).

A good young Angus steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne realised 380p/kg (£2,409) and another Limousin heifer from Mrs V Gay which went under the hammer at 378p/kg.

Due to the large entry many other good quality cattle forward which are too numerous to mention, but a credit to their vendors and a pleasure to see.

Cull Cows

The autumnal Cull Cow numbers are beginning to pick-up, with 55 passing through the ring this week selling on an equally strong trade to previous weeks.

Top of the day to 342p/kg (£2,729) for a meaty Limousin cow from Messrs R, H T & R M Rowe of Hayle, with their second 824kg Limousin cow close behind at 323p/kg (£2,662).

Mr B Cowell of Helston saw his good Simmental cow next at 300p/kg (£2,103) and a South Devon cow from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle at 292p/kg (£2,336) thereafter.

A Simmental cow from Mr L Vague of Baldhu, Truro sold away at 290p/kg and a Limousin cow from Mrs V Gay of St Austell was one bid behind at 289p/kg.

A weighty 866kg Hereford cow from Mr C W J Rickard of Blackwater, Truro looked well sold at 285p/kg, an Angus cow from Mr M A Semmens of Gorran, St Austell was next at 281p/kg, a good Simmental cow from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge parted away at 280p/kg and a second Simmental cow from Mr B Cowell realised 278p/kg.

Dairy types topped at 340p/kg by a Friesian cow from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston, a Friesian cow from Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro made 278p/kg, closely followed by a Friesian cow from Mr Rickard at 277p/kg.

Store Cattle

A strong entry and matching trade with heifers leading from the front this week topping at £2220 for a single 19-month-old Hereford on behalf of Messrs R J Gabriel & Son of Launceston.

A pair of 2-year-old Blue heifers from Mr A Giles of Paul, Penzance achieved £1735, whilst Mr D Vincent of Helston sold a single 1½ year old Hereford at £1600.

A smart 1 year old Hereford from Mr A M Luiten of Dobwalls, Liskeard parted away at £1510.

Steers selling to £2145 for a grand bunch of 7, 1½ year old, Shorthorns from Mr R J Tresize of Morvah, Penzance who then sold Anguses of the same age to £2090 and Stabilisers to £2070.

Mrs A Shazell of St Columb sold a 29-month-old Blue steer to £2125 and a forward bunch of Limousins of the same age to £2080.

Strong Hereford steers from Messrs R J Gabriel & Son and Mr W M Mark of St Austell achieved £2075 and £2020 respectively followed by a trio of 26-month-old Blues on behalf of Mr A Giles at £2,000 apiece.

Younger steers topping at £1550 for a cracking 13-month-old Charolais on behalf of Messrs M G and T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell followed by a trio of Shorthorns from Mr J Holman of Bodmin at £1440.

In-calf cows topping at £2100 on behalf of Mr B Cowell of Helston whilst cows and calves topped at £1920 on behalf of Mr L Pedley of Lostwithiel.

Rearing Calves

A real bite to the calf trade, strengthening on last week’s prices, and selling to a packed ringside full of buyers.

Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston setting the pace with their four week old Limousin bull calf parting away at £625, closely followed by a good single four week old Charolais bull calf from Messrs B & J Bailey from Veryan, Truro at £580 and another two Limo bulls from Messrs Bray at £550 and £535; the latter being tied with a Limousin bull from Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston.

Hereford bulls topped at £505 for a strong calf from Messrs T J & R Mann of Gulval, Penzance and a single Limousin bull calf from Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Creed, Truro at £450.

Blue Bulls topped by the best calf in from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro at £400, with Angus bulls to £380 and £370 for both Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro and Messrs L M & C G Vian of Wendron, Helston respectively.

Heifer calves to £450 for a smart month-old Charolais from Messrs Bailey, with a same aged Limousin heifer from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro at £425 and a four week old Blue heifer from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro at £405.

Other good Limousin heifers from Messrs Grylls at £400 twice which were tied with a Limousin heifer from Messrs Bray at the same money.

Many other good quality calves featuring between £300 and £400; with an overall section average of £343.

Prime Lambs

The liveweight trade continues to hold well, particularly for the heavies.

An exceptional trio of butchers’ 51.6kg lambs from Mr T Backway of St Eval topped at £165.50, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow setting the premium at 332p/kg for 38.2kg lambs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay, also sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd.

Cull Ewes

A short entry with very few fleshy or Continental ewes forward, many more of which are required to satisfy buyer demand with late October averages still approx £30-£40/head up on the year.

The overall average this week was £120. Topping at £165 were a pen of meaty Dorsets from Messrs Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle with another from the same Vendor at £145.

Leicesters to £156 for a fleshy pen from Mr N Taylor of Bodmin. Crossbreds from Mr B Tomkins of Helston to £144.50. Lleyn x to £140 for Mr W G Bray of Mullion, Helston.

Medium Texel x to £140 and £137 for Mrs A Shazell of St Columb. North of England Mules to £135 again for Mr Taylor. Suffolk to £131 for medium ewes from Messrs D L & A L Hooper of Probus.

An entry of lean rams selling to £120 for Dorsets from Messrs Hillside Farm Partnership of Truro.

Store Sheep

Another fair entry and good trade to match, topping at £134.50 for a strong pair from Messrs D L & A L Hooper of Probus, Truro, followed by a smart pen from Mr and Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay at £126.50.

Further lambs from Messrs Hooper to £125.50 whilst Mr R S Dawe of Grampound, Truro sold a single to £123.50.

A cracking consignment of 60 Texel & Roussin x ewe lambs from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb sold to £186 with further pens achieving £160 twice, £156 thrice.

Average £163. In-lamb Dorset ewes from Mr R S Dawe sold to £186 for 2T and £172 for full mouths.
