Prime Cattle
The trade for Prime Cattle at Truro continues to hold very strong, with the quality entry selling away at topping prices.
The best 693kg Limousin steer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay took top honours at 417p/kg (£2,890), followed by the top price heifer of the day, being a 647kg Limousin from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro at 405p/kg (£2,620).
Next up was a 591kg Limousin heifer from Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance at 404p/kg (£2,388) and a young non-FABBL 666kg Angus steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne sold away one bid behind at 403p/kg (£2,684).
A pair of Limo steers from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay featured next at 400p/kg (£2,812) and 399p/kg (£2,821). An OTM Limousin heifer from Mr Nicholls looked well sold at 395p/kg thereafter.
Cull Cows
A good entry of 37 cull cows and a lone cull bull forward this week, all selling on a stand-on trade.
A strong Limousin cow topped the day at 325p/kg from Mr W P Thomas ofThreemilestone, Truro, followed by a South Devon cow from Mr R N Hosking of Sancreed, Penzance at 321p/kg, with another Limousin cow from Mr Thomas at 315p/kg thereafter.
Mr W M Mark from Tywardreath, Par saw his Angus cow sell away at 310p/kg, Mr A Roberts of Coverack, Helston sold his Hereford cow at 297p/kg and a Limousin cow from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro realised 291p/kg.
A Blonde cow from Mr P A Mann of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth looked well sold at 294p/kg and another South Devon from Mr Hosking went under the hammer at 288p/kg.
Top dairy type to 285p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs W C & W R Martin of St Buryan, Penzance, with a Friesian cow from Mr A G Tilly of Crowlas, Penzance at 272p/kg and another Friesian cow from Messrs Martin at 266p/kg thereafter.
A good 925kg Limousin cull bull from Messrs P V & C S Forway of Threemilestone, Truro sold away at 279p/kg and £2,581.
Store Cattle
A good quality entry and a dearer trade if anything selling to a top call for steers of £2410 for a ring-full of six 31-month-old Montbeliardes from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb, who also sold Friesians of the same age to £1900.
A single 27-month-old Angus from Mr Horton of Penponds, Camborne sold to £2260, followed by a single Blue of the same age from Mr W M Mark of Tywardreath, St Austell at £2160.
A pair of 19-month-old Blues from Mr R E Richards of Helston achieved £2095, a single 18-month-old Angus from Mr O M Harris of Moorswater, sold to £1965, whilst 2-year-old steers from Mr F L Chapman of Truro achieved £1930, £1860 and £1845.
The best of the younger steers coming from Mr A Horton and his single 14-month-old Angus which parted away at £1775, whilst Mr R E Richards sold a 12-month-old Limousin to £1690. Further young steers from Mr Richards to £1620 and £1610 who went on to sell 9-month-old Limousins to £1380 and £1340.
Heifers selling to £1930 on behalf of Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance followed by 4 17-month-old Blues from Mr R E Richards at £1800. £1800 also achieved by Mr F L Chapman for 4 2-year-old Limousins, whilst 19-month-old heifers from Messrs S J & R M Truscott achieved £1670.
Younger heifers topping at £1355 on behalf of Messrs B J Tregoning & Son of Porkellis, Helston who sold further Limousins to £1300, whilst a single 15-month-old Charolais from Messrs S J and R M Trustcott sold to £1290.
A quality cattle breeding section saw eleven strong Simmental and Charolais cow and calf outfits from Mr B Cowell of Helston sell away on a strong trade with prices at £2,460, £2,390, £2,350 and £2,190 to name a few. The best Pedigree Simmental breeding heifer from Mr K Thomas of Wendron, Helston realised £1,670.
Rearing Calves
This week saw calves in short supply, although plenty of buyers in attendance resulted in a strong trade.
A run of stronger calves from 2-3 months old from Mr A Giles from Paul sold well with a Limousin x steer making £695 and their British Blue x steers at £660, £635 and £570 and going on to sell 3 Aberdeen Angus x heifers for £450 each and also a Limousin x heifer for £450.
Best of the young calves to £450 for a Charolais x bull sold by Messrs H L, T & C Lyne from St Clement who also went on to sell their Charolais x heifer at £360.
Mr D J Heller from Blackwater sold his best Aberdeen Angus x bull for £390 and further Aberdeen Angus x bulls at £335, £315 and £285 with his Aberdeen Angus x heifer selling for £240.
Mr V M Moyle from Penryn sold a nice run of Hereford x calves seeing bull calves at £380, £375 and £360, and a heifer calf making £285.
British Blue x heifers to £315 on behalf of Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah who sold further British Blue x heifers £315 and £300 and a Limousin x heifer at £240.
Prime Lambs
A lighter entry forward, but prices firm and particularly strong demand for the fleshed heavy lambs, selling to £191 for a single butchers’ lamb from Messrs A D & W D Brown of St Winnow, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Setting the premium at 344p/kg for a 41.6kg good conformation lambs from Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, also bought by J V Richards Ltd.
Cull Ewes
Another good entry met with competitive bidding and a fiery trade, and many more could have been sold as demand remains strong.
The overall average for the entire section was £122. Topping at £197 was a good confirmation Texel from Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay.
Dorsets to £178 for a huge ewe from Messrs R & J Bailey of Frogpool, Truro and £148.50 for a trio from Mr P Badcock of Helston. Suffolks to £175 from Mr S Jones of Breage, Helston and £148 from Messrs S J & S M Ward of Grampound Road, Truro.
Charollais to £169 again for Messrs Bailey. Further Texel x to £166 again from Mr Badcock and £160 from Messrs A D & W D Brown of St Winnow, Lostwithiel.
Zwarbles to £148 again for Messrs Brown. Rams to £149.50 for a 2T Charollais again for Messrs Brown. 2T (Sheep) to £153 for a Suffolk X again from Messrs Brown.
Store Lambs
A top-class entry of 110 store lambs this week, selling to an overall average of £120.
Dearest of the day were a heavy trio of Suffolks from Mr O Sawle of St Agnes which realised £138, followed by a superb consignment of 50 close to finish Texel x from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb, with pens to £131.50, £131, £130 twice and £127.
More expected from the same farm next week. £124 achieved by Mr P D Mitchell of Par, St Austell, followed by Mr C Lawrence of Stithians, Truro at £120.
