Prime Cattle

Another blistering prime cattle trade especially for the best quality sorts with another superb run of eight Limousins, mainly heifers, from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston topping out at 433p/kg for one of the two steers realising £3026.

Others from Messrs Bryant to 431p/kg and 430p/kg for similar handy weight heifers. Their overall consignment averaging 425.29p/kg.

A similar size entry from J B Old Ltd of Treyarnon Bay met competitive bidding to 388p/kg for a Limousin steer and £2570 for a native South Devon.

Another shapey South Devon of 34-months-old from Mr T Eustice of Crantock, Newquay sold at 386p/kg and £2945.

A heavy Limousin x from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston made £2624 with an Aberdeen Angus close behind at £2613.

Cull Cows

A good entry of cull cows again, seeing all 53 sell away on a solid stand-on trade.

Top price of 330p/kg for a Limousin cow-aged steer from Mr T Rowe of Cardinham, Bodmin, followed by a South Devon cow from Mr T Eustice of Crantock, Newquay at 320p/kg (£2,310) and a pair of Limousin cows from Mr W A Treloar of Perranporth, Truro realised 305p/kg (£2,306) and 295p/kg (£2,139).

A Charolais cow from Mr R Gregory of Chacewater, Truro parted away at 292p/kg (£2,599), an Angus cow from Mr Rowe looked well sold at 291p/kg, a Charolais cow from Mr L Vague of Baldhu, Truro sold for 285p/kg (£2,123) and a weighty 924kg South Devon cow from Mr A L Pascoe of Fraddam, Hayle parted away at 283p/kg and a resultant £2,615.

Mr R Gregory also sold his good 888kg Charolais cow at 283p/kg and £2,513. Dairy types topped at 305p/kg for a Friesian heifer from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro, with his other Friesian heifers at 288p/kg and 259p/kg.

Mr A G Tilly saw his two Friesian cows away at 269p/kg and 268p/kg, with many other good cows forward thereafter which are too numerous to mention.

Store Cattle

A large entry selling on yet another fast trade with heifers leading the way and topping at £2000 for a super pair of 21-month-old Anguses on behalf of Messrs J D Bromley & Son of St Gluvias, Penryn, followed by 2-year-old heifers from N H Semmens & Son Ltd of Sennen, Penzance with Shorthorns to £1900, Blues to £1840, Herefords to £1770 and Anguses to £1680.

A quality trio of 26-month-old Blues from Mr L Vague of Baldhu, Truro achieved £1840 whilst a pair of 2-year-old Anguses from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, St Austell parted away at £1800.

Best of the younger heifers from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro achieving £1190 for a 9-month-old Limousin who sold further Limousins of the same age to £1115 and £1040.

Steers topping at £1970 for a pair of 22-month-old Salers from Mr A L Nash of Hayle who sold further Salers to £1720 whilst Messrs R G Olver & Son sold a single 2-year-old Hereford to £1935.

2-year-old steers also in from N H Semmens & Son Ltd with Herefords to £1920, Blues to £1900 and Anguses to £1755.

Younger steers topping at £1580 for a trio of Anguses from Messrs J D Bromley & Son at £1580 who sold Herefords thereafter to £1560.

8-month-old steers in from Sixty Acres Ltd of Zelah, Truro achieving £1090 for the choice six Limousins whilst Heard Bros of Wadebridge sold five 7-month-old Simmental Steers to £940.

Rearing Calves

Another storming calf trade, with a classy entry of both younger calves and also some stronger stirks forward. Overall averages looking very sharp with bull calves at £400.68 and heifer calves at £340.22.

Topping the younger types was the usual quality run forward from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston with their best 5 week old Limousin bull at £605, followed by a run of 2 month old well farmed Blues from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at £555 twice and £495.

Mr N Monies from Zennor, St Ives saw his 9 day old Blue bull top at £495 and a 13 day old Blue bull at £490, with another 5 week old Limo bull from Messrs Bray one bid behind at £485.

More quality young Blue bulls from Mr Monies selling well with a 14 day old animal at £470, a 26 day old animal at £465 and an 11 day old animal at £360.

The heifer trade no easier with Messrs Bray topping at £505 for their 5 week old Limo heifer, Messrs R N & D Jenkin with their pair of Blues at £440 and a 30 day old Limousin heifer from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston well sold at £420.

Angus heifers topped at £400 for a stronger 3 month old animal from Messrs Jenkin and month-old Hereford heifers to £335 from Messrs A & B Pascoe of North Country, Redruth.

A run of shapey 5 ½ month old Blue steers from W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston met with competitive bidding topping out at £920 for a trio, £900 for another trio and £860 for a single.

A run of stirks from Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance also looked well sold with prices at £540 for an Angus steer and his heifers to £550 for a good Blue.

Prime Lambs

The finished lamb trade has strengthened this week with improved averages.

Setting the premium at 333p/kg for a single 48kg lamb from Ms C Gadsby of Trevellion, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Prices peaked at £180 for a 56kg butchers lamb from Rebecca Frank of Kerley, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Cull Ewes

A lighter entry of ewes with very few Continentals forward, yet a real surge in the trade this week.

Buyer demand is very strong and many more ewes required to satisfy requirements. The overall average was £133.50/head. Top call of £162 for a pair of Dorset ewes from Messrs G W & H W Hawkey of St Wenn, Bodmin. Suffolk x to £157 for Mr C R N Baker of Newquay.

Suffolk to £155 for Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan, Penzance. Mules to £155 and £147 again for Messrs Hawkey. Texel x to £154 again for Mr Baker.

Further Dorsets to £152.50 again for Messrs Hawkey. 2T (sheep) to £147 and £138 for wethers from Messrs Y & K Waters & Griffin of St Buryan, Penzance and £131 for their ewe. £128 for a 2T Suffolk from Messrs P C J Farming of Helston.

Store Sheep

Another brave entry and no shortage of good quality types. 150 selling to an average of £114 and topping at £144.50 for Miss A Keyte of Penzance, who sold another single to £133.

A pair from Miss J Austin of St Just, Penzance achieved £135.50, Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay sold pens to £132.50 & £129, and Messrs J R Stephens & Son of Lostwithiel sold a smart pen to £129.50.

Plenty of lambs thereafter trading in excess of £110 and longer-term types placing between £80 and £100.
