Prime Cattle
The Prime Cattle trade continues to forge on at pace, with absolutely no sign of demand easing.
Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston in the limelight again this week with their best Limousin heifer racing away to 435p/kg (£2,841) and their second heifer at 405p/kg thereafter.
Steers very well topped by a classy 683kg Limousin from F G Pryor & Son Ltd of Perranwell Station, Truro at 425p/kg (£2,903), followed by the remainder of Messrs Bryant’s consignment of quality Limousin steers at 412p/kg (£2,797) and 410p/kg twice, with one of the latter claiming top pounds-per-head of £3,141.
Another Limousin steer from F G Pryor & Son Ltd also parted away at 410p/kg (£2,804) and good Limousin steers from J B Old Farms Ltd of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow realising 374p/kg (£2,461) and 370p/kg twice (£2,483 & £2,697).
A weighty 850kg Limousin steer from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston, which was full of meat, traded at £3,018.
Cull Cows
Another very strong trade for cull animals, with the best of the entry achieving topping prices.
A pair of good South Devon cows from Messrs W B & S P Penrose of Praze-An-Beeble, Camborne took top honours at 352p/kg and 321p/kg, with a Limousin cow from Mr F Stephens of St Winnow, Lostwithiel next up at 300p/kg.
A third South Devon cow from Messrs Penrose featured next at 277p/kg, a Devon cow from Agricola Growers Ltd of Antony, Torpoint one bid behind at 276p/kg and a weighty Simmental cow from Messrs P M & A Jewell of Alverton, Penzance one bid behind that at 275p/kg.
A Devon cow from Messrs R C & J Hawke of St Dennis, St Austell made 273p/kg and a South Devon cow from Messrs C D & S C Rodda of Crantock, Newquay realised 270p/kg.
Dairy types to 237p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, a Norwegian Red cow from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth parted away at 229p/kg and a Montbeliarde cow from Messrs A & B Pascoe of North Country, Redruth traded at 228p/kg.
Store Cattle
A good entry and trade to match topping at £2065 for a single 19-month-old South Devon steer on behalf of Messrs W B & S P Penrose of Praze-An-Beeble, Camborne followed by cracking 2-year-old steers from Mr J S Trounson of Cury, Helston who sold Limousins to £1960 and Blues to £1855.
Mrs S Goody of Buryas Bridge, Penzance sold a pair of 26-month-old Herefords to £1820. Mr K M Ley of Sithney, Helston sold 1½-year-old Herefords to £1600, whilst a pair of 18-month-old Simmentals from Mr F J Moyle of Carnmenellis, Redruth realised £1470.
Best of the younger steers to £1480 on behalf of Messrs W H B Stevens and Daughter of The Lizard, Helston, followed by Messrs J A & J H Mann of Zennor, St Ives who sold six 1-year-old British Blues to £1170.
Heifers to £1880 on behalf of Mr K M Ley, followed by a 17-month-old Angus from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell to £1785 and a 2-year-old Blue from Mr J S Trounson at £1750.
Mr J S Trounson sold further 2-year-olds to £1525, whilst Mr R T Dunn sold a pair of 19-month-old Charolais to £1625. 1-year-old heifers to £1215 on behalf of Mr P C J Bennetts of Sithney, Helston, followed by 14-month-old Blues from Messrs J A & J H Mann at £975.
Rearing Calves
A stand-on trade to report, with the stronger calves and stirks meeting exceptional ringside demand.
Top of the younger calves to £660 twice for a pair of 2 m.o Blue steers from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro, with a third Blue steer from the same vendor at £605; the latter tied with a strong 4 week old Limousin bull calf from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston at the same money.
Messrs Blee continued their run of strong young calves with another month-old Limousin bull at £600 and their Limousin heifer at £390.
The usual quality run of young calves from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston saw their best month-old Limousin bull at £550, and another trio with the same comments at £540 and £500 twice.
Miss L Burnett of Roche, St Austell saw her pair of strong 3 m.o Blue steers both away at £525 apiece.
Younger Blue bulls at 5 weeks old to £415 from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro and the best month-old Angus bull calf from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro parted away at £265.
Heifers witnessing a similarly strong trade topping at £400 for a 4 week old Limousin from Messrs Bray, a same-aged Limousin heifer from Messrs Blee at £390, a 28 day old Blue heifer from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth also at £390 and a month-old Simmental from Messrs Bray also at the same money.
Blue heifers from Messrs George to £365 and the best Hereford heifer of the day to £255 for Maxco Farms.
A good run of well-farmed Angus stirks consigned from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston saw a ring-full of eight month-old steers realising £845 and a trio of same-aged heifers at £615.
W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston were back again this week with their best 5 ½ m.o Blue steers to £800 thrice, a trio of slightly younger Blue steers to £775 and a single 3 ½ m.o Hereford steer to £700.
Prime Lambs
A decent entry forward and firm trade.
Some exceptional top prices with three pens over £180 and peaking at £186 for a muscled 55.5kg lamb from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge purchased by Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.
Setting the premium at 325p/kg for a pair of 44kg lambs from Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston.
Breeding Ewes
A consignment of 63 strong Dorset breeding ewes forward from Mr A D Brewer of Little Petherick, Wadebridge saw two pens of ewe lambs sold to £202.
A mixed pen of 4T and 6T ewes sold to £180 with 6T ewes selling at £175 and two pens of full mouth ewes selling at £170.
Cull Ewes
A fiery trade for cull ewes this week with an overall average of £140.50.
Many more could have been sold and vendors are strongly encouraged to market ewes. A top call of £173 for a Suffolk x mule from Messrs W P L Cowling & Sons of Watergate Bay, Newquay (Presented by Mrs L Ballard).
This was followed very closely by a big pen of strong Charollais x Suffolk ewes from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay selling to £170.50, with further pens of Texel x and Charollais x ewes from the same vendors selling to £158 twice.
Dorsets to £159 and £149 for pens from Mr A D Brewer of Little Petherick, Wadebridge. Mules to £156 and £139 for Mr G C Grigg of Veryan Green, Truro; £137 for Mr P C Tregunna of Veryan Green, Truro; and £136 for Messrs K S & L Dodd of Kea, Truro.
Lleyns to £149 for Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay. Further Suffolk x to £147 and £145 for Mr O M Jay of Dobwalls, Liskeard and £141 again for Mr Tregunna. Longwool x to £135 again for Messrs Gregor.
Cull rams to £146 for the best of a run of plainer bodied Charollais from Messrs T B Mitchell & Partners of Idless, Truro; and £145 for a FM Texel wether from Miss J Carruthers of St Just, Penzance. Sheep (2T) to £143 for a Charollais x from Mrs J C Williams of St Clement, Truro.
The averages speak for themselves, with all shapes and sizes selling very well on a flying trade, and vendors are strongly encouraged to market ewes now.
Store Sheep
Numbers lighter but a stand on trade averaging £115 a head.
Top price to £145.50 on behalf of Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan, Penzance, followed by cracking stores from Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance at £137, £132 and £129.
Mr D J Piper of Withiel, Bodmin sold smart lambs to £132.50, Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay saw their best to £129, whilst the pick of a big run from Messrs K S & L Dodd of Kea, Truro looked well sold at £126.50.
