Prime Cattle
Numbers slightly lighter than previous weeks, although the liveweight trade would still look firm for all on offer. Top honours away to Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro at 416p/kg for their young 15 month old 554kg Parthenais heifer.
Next up was a good non FABBL 526kg Limousin steer from Mr O Penellum of St Erme, Truro at 410p/kg, followed by a smart 583kg Charolais heifer from Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes at 404p/kg.
A pair of animals tied next at 400p/kg being a strong 626kg Angus steer from Messrs R E, G L & M R Body of Gwinear, Hayle and a second 568kg Parthenais heifer from Messrs Williams.
A pair of good Charolais steers from Messrs Body parted away at 395p/kg and 392p/kg next, a pair of Limousin steers from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro realised 390p/kg and 375p/kg and their Limousin heifer at 381p/kg thereafter.
Heavyweight non FABBL heifers in from Mr T Dance of St Ervan, Wadebridge to 350p/kg (£2,223) and 310p/kg (£2,362) for his 635kg Angus and 762kg Limousin respectively.
OTM steers topped by a 614kg Limousin from Messrs Body at 380p/kg and top pounds-per-head of the day achieved by the same vendor for their 661kg Charolais steer at 392p/kg and a resultant £2,592.
Cull Cows
Yet another respectable entry of 33 cull cows & bulls forward sold to a similarly strong trade to previous weeks, with all of the regular buyers present and correct.
Top price to 322p/kg for a cow-aged non FABBL Devon steer from Mr E Brown of Gwennap, followed by an Angus cow from Messrs J H & S M Dark & Sons of Mullion, Helston at 289p/kg.
A run of good South Devon cows from Mr R D Gendall of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston featured next with their 750kg animal at 287p/kg (£2,153) and others at 279p/kg and 277p/kg to name but a few.
Another non FABBL Devon from Mr Brown, this time a cow, sold away at 275p/kg, followed by another Angus from Messrs Dark at 273p/kg and a non FABBL Limousin cow from Messrs B K & E L Piper of Sithney, Helston made 272p/kg.
Limited dairy types again topped at 274p/kg for a Friesian from Messrs Dark, with further prices from the same stable at 255p/kg and 253p/kg. Two cull bulls entered this week, topping at 245p/kg for a 1047kg Limousin from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston at a resultant £2,565.
Store Cattle
A very large entry for the time of year and good quality stores trading for strong money as per recent weeks. Top steers selling to £2,005 for a pair of 21mo Herefords on behalf of Mr R Green of Penzance, with a further Hereford from Mr Green realising £1,800.
A strong consignment of 1½ yr old steers from Messrs J J & M Bowden & Son of St Columb selling to £1,900 for the choice Blues and £1,870 for the choice Herefords, Angus to £1,760 and £1,700 with further Blues to £1,700 also. A pair of Simmentals from Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan, Penzance sold to £1,810, followed by a pair of 17mo Limousins from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro at £1,620.
Some first class 1yr old steers through the ring this week, topping at £1,985 for a flashy Limousin from Mr I C Prowse, which was also achieved by Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro, followed by five superb 15mo Angus from Mr P Roberts of Penzance at £1,780. A single 13mo Hereford from Mr D Pollard of Truro parted away at £1,700, whilst a single Simmental from Mr P Roberts sold for £1,580.
Heifers also saw a fast trade, topping at £2,280 for a cracking 28mo Shorthorn from Messrs A A & D P Eddy of Hayle, followed by a single 29mo Hereford from Mr R A Pollard of Bodmin at £1,995. A Limousin from Messrs A A & D P Eddy achieved £1,800, whilst a 20mo Hereford from Mr R Green realised £1,770.
Adding to their fine run of steers, Messrs J J & M Bowden & Son sold 20mo Limousins to £1,770, Blues to £1,765 and Welsh Black to £1,755. Younger heifers to £1,355 for Herefords from Messrs S J Rowe & Son of Hayle, whilst Mr N Michell of Redruth sold a 1yr old Hereford at £1,235. Five 1yr old Angus from Messrs F C & B R Berryman of Zennor, St Ives parted away at £1,050.
A good entry of cows and calves selling to a top call of £2,700 for a Charolais outfit from Mr B Cowell of Wendron, with further outfits from the same vendor to £2,530, and £2,470, whilst Mr N Michell sold a Limousin outfit to £2,480 and further at £2,270.
Cows and calves also in from Morcom Partnership of Truro topping at £2,200. A Charolais breeding bull from Mr B Cowell went through the ring at £3,400.
Rearing Calves
Another good entry today seeing a tremendous trade for all on offer, only a handful of young stirks forward seeing a 12 week old British Blue x steer selling for a mighty £875 for Messrs S J Dustow & Son from Ladock, who also sold a bunch of 4 British Blue x heifers at the same age flying away to £815.
The young calves saw spirited bidding throughout with a British Blue x bull away at £590 for Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East who sold further British Blue x bulls for £495 and £475 and going on to sell British Blue x heifers for £460 with another at £395.
Aberdeen Angus x bulls sold to a top of £525 for Mr R G Rowe from London Apprentice, young Simmental x bulls to £505 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston with further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £470 for Mr T F Sampson from St Newlyn East.
Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian had their usual good run of young British Blue x calves seeing bulls to £410 and a exceptional trade for their heifers with 2 making £405 each.
Plenty of other vendors marketing bull calves between £325 and £380. Also, Friesian bull calves saw two make £220 each for Messrs K & M Ferris from Gunwalloe.
Leading the way in the heifer section was a consignment of very young Charolais x for Messrs B & J Bailey from Veryan selling for £475, £470, £465, £460 and £450, young Limousin x heifers to £405 for Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin and plenty of others sold between £345 and £395.
Prime Hoggs
Still good numbers of hoggs coming through and keen trade topping at £150 for a smart pen of 58kg hoggs from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, sold to Mr L Cleave of Highampton.
A strong run of 3 pens forward from Mr G Henwood of Praze saw his 41.5kg Beltex hoggs sell for the premium at 307p/kg.
Prime Lambs
A good entry and generally firmer trade. The well-finished lambs in demand and selling to a top price of £167.50 for a superb pen of butcher’s quality Texel lambs from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Setting the premium to 381p/kg for a fresh pen of 41.1kg lambs from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb, also sold to Trevarthens.
Cull Ewes
An increased entry forward again this week and a stand-on trade.
Very strong top prices for good conformation, less fat ewes. We are seeing a high proportion of very fat ewes, with leaner ewes looking dearer in contrast. Prices peaked at £229 and £209 for two stand-out Charollais ewes for Messrs R J & A M Pedrick of Buckfast.
Texels to £201 for Messrs M J & L H J Anselmi of Porthkerris, Helston with further Texels to £196, £178 & £173 for Mr T Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge and £172 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro. Zwartbles to £185 for a pair from Mr M Allen of Roche. Suffolks to £180 & £168 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners; and £175 for Messrs C P & K L Wearne of Wendron, Helston.
Further Charollais to £174 for Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay and £168 for Messrs Pedrick. Clun Forest ewes to £139 for Messrs Anselmi. Mules to £150 for Mr W J Hosken of Manaccan, Helston.
Rams to £165 and £149 for two pens of very well rounded Charollais x Wethers from Mr P Behrens of Prussia Cove, followed by £148 for a Poll Dorset from Messrs G W & H E Hawkey of St Wenn. Sheep (2T) to £157 for a Texel x from Mr G W Coon of Mevagissey.
Store Sheep
Another light entry to report, topping at £119.50 for strong Charollais x hoggs on behalf of Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, followed by a tidy pen of Dorset x suck lambs in from Laity Farms, Hayle at £113.50.
Further hoggs to £108.50 and £98 for Mr R H Eddy of Camborne and Mr L Evans of Liskeard respectively.
