Prime Cattle

Another sizeable entry of 38 Prime Cattle forward, with all looking to sell on what would be a solid trade.

Heifers claiming the top spot with a 555kg Blue from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay at 390p/kg (£2,165), a 549kg Limousin heifer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay achieved 380p/kg (£2,086), which was tied with another one of Mrs Julian’s Limousins, this time a 672kg steer, at the same money and £2,554.

The best 662kg Limousin steer from a run of well-finished animals from J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow parted away at 371p/kg (£2,456) and another pair of Limousin steers from Mrs Julian next at 365p/kg (£2,489) and 364p/kg (£2,410).

Three bullocks tied at 360p/kg; namely a 735kg Hereford steer from Mr J E G Brewer of St Merryn, Padstow, a 626kg Limousin heifer from Messrs D Trewern & Son of Porthcurno, Penzance and a 697kg Simmental heifer from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance.

Further heifers to 358p/kg for a 626kg Charolais from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro, with their second same-breed 616kg heifer close behind at 355p/kg.

The best Limousin from Miss S P Gribble of Lanner, Redruth realised 354p/kg and another 581kg Hereford steer from Mr Brewer parted away for 353p/kg.

Cull Cows

Still good numbers of cull animals coming through the sale ring, with the trade also holding firm.

Top of the day to 314p/kg for a middle-aged Friesian cow from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of The Lizard, Helston, followed by a good Angus cow from Messrs K P & A Sowden of Constantine, Falmouth at 275p/kg.

Messrs I C & W P Lobb of St Ewe saw their South Devon cow sell away for 272p/kg and a Shorthorn cow from Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell, Newquay was next in line at 269p/kg, with a Hereford cow from Messrs W Pascoe & Son of Wendron, Helson one bid behind at 268p/kg.

Further dairy types at 262p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro and a pair of Friesian cows from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro looked well sold at 258p/kg and 250p/kg, the latter tied with a Friesian cow from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, St Austell at the same money.

Store Cattle

Yet another lift in the trade for a fine entry, with steers topping at £2300 on behalf of McCardell and Thompson Ltd of Summercourt for their single 28-month-old British Blue, with a pair of 2-year-old Limousins from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, St Austell at £1930, and Blues from the same Vendor to £1885.

Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of the Lizard sold five framey 2-year-old Limousins to £1810, whilst Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan, Penzance sold a fine 2-year-old Simmental to £1790.

Younger steers very much stole the show, selling to a sensational £2135 for five 13-month-old Limousins from Messrs C R, I E & A M White of Helston, with Messrs White going on to sell further 1-year-old Limousins to £1995 and a trio of 1-year-old Charolais to £1965.

Thereafter, younger steers selling to £1755 for a trio of 13-month-old Herefords from Messrs R Lawry & Son of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth, whilst five 1-year-old South Devons from Mr J L Sampson realised £1695 and a 10-month-old Simmental from Mr A Kemp of Truro was a touch behind at £1690.

Heifers were lighter in number, topping at £1865 for a 31-month-old Limousin on behalf of Neil Rowe Farming Ltd, followed by a single Blue, being 27-month-old from Messrs R G Olver & Son at £1800.

21-month-old heifers to £1390, £1380 and £1370 on behalf of Mr W E Hosken of Manaccan, Helston, whilst younger heifers to £1200 for a trio of Blues on behalf of Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro.

A forward bunch of seven 9-month-old Limousin heifers to £1000 a piece on behalf of Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston with many other young heifers also looking well sold thereafter.

Rearing Calves

Trade would look well up on the week, with the best of the milk calves flying away to £705 for a British Blue x bull on behalf of Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston who sold further British Blue x bulls for £600 and £580 and their Simmental x bull making £590.

Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston sold a Simmental x bull for £640 and going on to top the heifer section with their Simmental x heifer making £520.

Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance sold an Aberdeen Angus x bull for £550, and a nice run of British Blue x calves from Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro seeing their best bull to £500 and a Hereford x bull at £420 and their British Blue x heifers at £465, £440, £430 and £405.

Further British Blue x bulls to £435 for Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, and Friesian bull calves looking well sold at £295, £270 and £235 for Messrs J & S Trembath from Gurnards Head. Plenty of other heifer calves sold between £350 to £400.

Just a small entry of weaned calves seeing a Limousin x steer making £700 and a two month old Limousin x heifer at £600 for Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen.

Prime Lambs

A flying trade, with strong prices from start to finish.

The fleshed heavies particularly sought after and selling to a top price of £179.00 for a pair of butchers Suffolk x lambs from Mr J T Rowe of Penponds, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Setting the premium to 359p/kg for a smart pen of 43.5kg lambs for Messrs J Lenthall & Son of St Columb, purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A firmer trade this week with fewer forward, but prices having increased again to an overall sale average of £137.

Leading the day at £176 were two pens of Texels from different Vendors: first was a medium bodied Texel ewe from Messrs T F & D J Crapp of Helston, jointly with a pen of four medium Texel ewes from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb.

Just behind those at £175 was the best of a run from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay.

Following on from the same Vendor were two Suffolk x both at £165.50. Zwartbles to £157.50 for a leaner pair from Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston.

Further Texels to £154 for Mrs Shazell’s next pen of smaller bodied Texels; £154 and £152 again for Messrs Jones; £149 for Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro; and £136 for Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay. Lleyns to £142.50 for Mr D & Mrs S Searle of Wendron, Helston.

Dorsets to £134 for Messrs I C & W P Lobb of St Ewe. Further Suffolk x to £130 again for Mr Wright. A single 2T sheep forward, sold away to £125 for Messrs T F & D J Crapp of Helston.

Store Sheep

A light entry to report, with Suffolk x full mouth breeding ewes to £151 on behalf of Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay with further lots to £150 and £135 twice.

Continental store lambs selling to £125 for a good quality pen on behalf of Messrs T F & J D Crapp of Helston.
