Prime Cattle

A sizeable entry of prime cattle to report with a strong trade seen for the good quality on offer.

Top of the day for a 601kg Limousin heifer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay at 388p/kg, followed by a run of super Limousin heifers from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay with prices at 384p/kg twice and 380p/kg.

J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay Padstow saw their tidy 632kg Limousin heifer also part away for 380p/kg, a Limousin heifer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay went under the hammer at 378p/kg and a final trio of Limousin heifers from Mrs J Julian saw 375p/kg, 370p/kg and 365p/kg.

Steers to 350p/kg for a total of four animals being a Limousin from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Camborne, a Hereford from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro and a pair of Limousins from J B Old Farms.

Another good Limousin from J B Old Farms at 348p/kg, followed by an Angus steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne at 345p/kg. Top pounds-per-head to £2,875 for a weighty 866kg Blue steer from Mr R A Coad.

Cull Cows

Still good numbers through the Cull Ring.

Top prices were for a pair of cow-aged Limousin steers from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Camborne at 325p/kg and 318p/kg, followed by a Charolais cow from Mr D R Michell of Lower Penponds, Camborne at 300p/kg.

A Stabiliser cow from Mr P Green of Stithians, Truro sold for 286p/kg, with a pair of good South Devon cows from Mr R Sadler of Mawnan Smith at 283p/kg and 278p/kg, the latter being tied with a Charolais cow from Messrs Pearce at the same money.

A Continental cow from Mr C I Bloomfield of Altarnun, Bodmin realised 280p/kg and the best South Devon cow from Mr T G Hawke of Colan, Newquay at 276p/kg.

More animals forward which are too numerous to mention but all looking well sold.

Dairy types topped at 267p/kg by a Friesian cow from Messrs D J & A E Skewes of Penzance, with their second only one bid behind at 266p/kg.

Messrs J & S Trembath from Zennor, St Ives, then saw their pair of Friesian cows trade at 241p/kg and 236p/kg.

Store Cattle

As expected, an increase in numbers on last week, with plenty of quality through the ring and selling on a fine trade.

Steers selling to £2095 for a sublime trio of 2-year-old Limousins from Mr O Hicks of Zelah, Truro who also sold Angus steers of the same age to £2050 and Charolais to £2010.

A pair of 27-month-old Limousins from the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly realised £1970, followed closely by 2-year-old Blues at £1950 from Mr O Hicks, whilst a pair of 24-month-old Friesians from Messrs R G Keast & Son of Allet, Truro parted away at £1945.

An Aberdeen Angus from Messrs J F & K L Worden of Breage, Helston sold to £1835, whilst a trio of 21-month-old Angus from Mr W R Beard of Penzance sold to £1805 with further 2-year-old steers to £1745 on behalf of Messrs R G Keast & Son, £1715 on behalf of Messrs J F & K L Worden and £1700 on behalf of Mr O Hicks.

Best of the younger steers selling to £1635 for a classy 1-year-old Charolais on behalf of Messrs A J & K P Johns of Truro, followed by four Limousins of the same age from Messrs L J Richards & Son of Redruth at £1620. A good trade for heifers with many of the aforementioned Vendors topping the charts.

Firstly, Mr O Hicks with Limousins to £2095, £2040 and £1770, followed by a pair of 21-month-old Angus from Mr W R Beard at £1630.

A trio of 21-month-old Blues from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell realised £1550, which was also achieved by Messrs A J & K P Johns for their 17-month-old Angus, whilst 2-year-old heifers from Messrs J F & K L Worden achieved £1505 for Limousins and £1500 for Blues.

Young heifers topping at £1340 for a 12-month-old Limousin on behalf of Messrs L J Richards & Son, followed by a smart South Devon from Mr W L Rowell down from Liskeard.

Top quality cattle on show in the catalogued dispersal sale of cows and calves on behalf of Messrs S J Rowe & Son of Gwinear, Hayle with the premium Hereford outfits selling to £2400, £2320 twice, £2260 twice and £2240 twice whilst Charolais topped at £2380.

Rearing Calves

An excellent entry of calves this week selling on a strong trade throughout.

Best of the bull calves saw a smart young British Blue x flying away to £620 for Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston who also sold a Limousin x bull for £495 and their pair of Limousin x heifers making £440 each.

Messrs G B & J G Ellis from Penzance had a consignment of 20 British Blue x calves on offer with the best of their British Blue x bulls to £560 twice and their heifers selling to £495 with further heifers making £450 x 3, £440 x 2 and £430 x 2.

Mr A Giles from Paul, Penzance sold a Limousin x bull for £550 and going on to top the heifer section with a British Blue x heifer making £565.

Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey from St Keverne, Helston sold their usual good quality Limousin x calves seeing bulls to £525 and further bulls making £505 and £485 and their heifers selling to £395.

Hereford x bulls sold to a top of £485 for Messrs R G Olver & Son from St Stephen and further Hereford x bulls to £470 for Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro who sold a further Hereford x bull for £460 and their British Blue x bulls at £465 twice and their best British Blue x heifer away at £480.

Aberdeen Angus x bulls selling to £470 for Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance with further Hereford x bulls to £460 for Messrs J M & A J Laity from Rosudgeon who also sold British Blue x heifer to £400.

Messrs T A & S J Kempthorne from Delabole sold a nice run of young British Blue x calves with bulls to £455 and heifers to £380 twice.

A host of other vendors marketing bull calves between £420 to £455 and plenty of heifers between £350 to £400.

Prime Lambs

A good strong entry of finished lambs sold to a steady trade, in-line with the National trends.

Topping the averages at 351p/kg were the best pick of two pens of good conformation Texel lambs from Messrs C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Well out in front of the top prices at £175 were a trio of 58kg butchers lambs from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Cull Ewes

A mixed entry of cull ewes forward this week, with a wide range of quality and a high proportion of smaller bodied and plainer ewes.

The trade remains vibrant with good ewes continuing to sell well, and to a top price of £181 for a medium bodied shorn Texel ewe from Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro.

Further Texels to £174 for Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay; £170 for Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay; £166 for Mr T D Retallick of St Columb; £164 again for Messrs Tredinnick; £154.50 again for Messrs Jones; and £149 for Mrs A Shazell of St Columb.

Suffolks to £166 and £149 for two pens from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne; and £149 for Mr J F Rowe of Menabilly, Par. Suffolk x Mules to £156 again for Messrs Tredinnick.

Just a handful of sheep (2T) forward selling to £120 for a smart pair of Lleyn wethers from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston.

Store Sheep

Another light entry, topping at £119 for a pair of hoggs on behalf of Mrs C E Kent of St Austell, followed by a single Dorset x Lamb from Mr J V Waters of Truro at £105.

Full mouth breeding ewes on behalf of Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay topping at £147.50.
