Prime Cattle
Another good entry of Prime Cattle forward with the trade picking up slightly again.
Top price was very well awarded to a stunning 637kg Limousin heifer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 396p/kg (£2,523), followed by another 622kg Limousin heifer from the same stable at 391p/kg (£2,432) and a final 613kg OTM Limousin heifer rounding off Mrs Julian’s day at 384p/kg (£2,354).
Steers topped at 378p/kg (£2,378) for a 629kg Simmental from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance, with his other classy Simmental steers at 376p/kg (£2,136) and 369p/kg (£2,129), followed by the best 663kg Angus steer from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay at 365p/kg (£2,420).
Mr A Taylor of Nancegollan, Helston saw his Devon heifer go under the hammer at 375p/kg, a good 614kg Angus steer from Mr R I Nicholls of St Clement, Truro parted away at 358p/kg (£2,198), which was closely followed by a 556kg Friesian steer from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro trading at 356p/kg.
Cull Cows
Less numbers around in the cull section, although a good trade witnessed for those on offer.
Top price was achieved by a cow-aged Blue steer from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro at 298p/kg, followed by a cracking non-FABBL 774kg Limousin cow from Messrs E V Hosking & Son of Wendron at 295p/kg (£2,283).
Mr A Taylor of Nancegollan, Helston marketed his Devon cow at 288p/kg (£2,079), which was tied with a Blue cow from Messrs Dustow at the same money.
The best big 839kg non-FABBL Charolais cow forward from Messrs H Dunstan & Sons of Mabe, Penryn realised 284p/kg (£2,383), with other same-breed cows from the same vendor at 270p/kg and 240p/kg and a final Blue cowaged steer from Messrs Dustow looked well sold at 260p/kg.
Dairy types topped by a pair of Friesian heifers from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at 289p/kg and 287p/kg, and a pair of weighty Friesian cows from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro at 270p/kg (£2,136) and 262p/kg (£2,389).
Store Cattle
Not so many through the ring with a stand on trade and selling to a top call of £2000 for a pair of 17-month-old Limousin steers from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro, very closely followed by a pair of 22-month-old Limousins at £1995 on behalf of R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell.
Messrs J H Hawkey & Son of St Newlyn East sold a single 21-month-old Angus to £1905, followed by a single 18-month-old Blue from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1735.
Blues to £1670 on behalf of Messrs J H Hawkey & Son and £1660 twice on behalf of Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro.
Younger steers topping at £1945 for a phenomenal bunch of five 14-month-old Charolais on behalf of Messrs J & S Trembath of Gurnards Head, Zennor, with further Charolais from the same vendor to £1700.
Smart 8-month-old steers from W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston realised £1105 and £1100. Heifers topping at £1710 for a trio of 20-month-old Blues on behalf of Mr R T Dunn, a trio of 17-month-old Limousins on behalf of Messrs W S Gay & Son at £1665 and a single 2-year-old Limousin from Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly at £1630.
2-year-old Blues to £1500 and £1470 on behalf of Messrs D C & W A Thomas, whilst Mr J Tabb of Mevagissey sold a 20-month-old Longhorn heifer to £1365.
Younger heifers topping at £1270 for a 14-monthold Blue, which was followed by 8-month-old heifers from W P & J Jenkin Ltd at £1040 and £890.
Rearing Calves
The volume is short and the demand is great, with plenty of buyers in attendance seeing the trade finding a whole new gear.
Best of the milk calves flying away to £675 for a British Blue x bull sold by Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East, Newquay who sold another British Blue x bull for £610 and their British Blue x heifers at £400 and £390.
Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen, St Austell sold a Limousin x bull for £660 with another making £645, and their Aberdeen Angus x bull looking well sold at £540, and their British Blue x heifer achieving £520.
Simmental x bulls making £620 twice for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston who also sold a Simmental x heifer for £400.
The best of the Aberdeen Angus x bulls making £600 for Mr D J Heller from Blackwater, Truro with further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £505 and £500 for Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance.
Leading the way with the heifer calves was Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston seeing their best British Blue x heifer away at £665 and another British Blue x heifer at £620 and their Aberdeen Angus x heifer selling well at £560.
Further British Blue heifers to £500 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed.
Just a handful of young stirks on offer from Messrs W Marsh & Son selling a British Blue x heifer at £705 and their pair of Aberdeen Angus x steers making £690.
Prime Lambs
A good entry and firmer averages again on the week.
Not quite the dizzy heights of last week’s leading prices, but strong trade and demand from the ringside prevails.
Topping the day at £181 for two vendors, firstly, for a single 58kg butcher’s lamb from Sturman’s Livestock of Burlawn, sold to Stillman’s Ltd. of Taunton; also hitting the top-spot were a smart trio of 51.5kg lambs from Mr O Penellum of St Erme, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
A muscular 42kg lamb from Mr O Penellum set the premium at 374p/kg, and sold to Stillman’s of Taunton.
Hoggs
A handful entered this week and topping at £186 for a 73kg single from Ansell Bros of Ludgvan, Penzance with a further single from the same vendor at £159, whilst Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan, Penzance sold solid Suffolk pens to £153 and £149.
Cull Ewes
A good run of mainly commercial ewes this week, with the vast majority consisting of the composite breeds, and a fast trade for all on offer.
Of the handful of continentals forward, top price was £200 for a Texel x from Messrs P T R & P E Jones of Crantock, Newquay with their other pens at £196 & £158.
Further Texels to £187 for Mr R Rowe of Truro and Texel x to £165 for Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge and £157 for Mr T D Retallick of St Columb.
Suffolks to £185 again for Mr Retallick; £180 for Messrs C P & K L Wearne; £159 for Messrs Kemp & Booker of St Columb & £159 for Mr O Penellum of St Erme, Truro.
Lleyns to £170 & £151 for Messrs D & S Searle of Wendron, Helston. Char x to £161 again for Mr R Rowe.
Dorset to £159 for another pen of big bodied ewes from Ansell Brothers of Ludgvan, Penzance.
Composite types to £157 again for Messrs Kemp & Booker; £150 for Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay; £150 again for Mr Penellum and £150 for the best of a solid run from Messrs S J & D E J Worden of St Martin.
Still a few 2T (sheep) coming forward, topping at £141 for a Dorset again from Messrs Ansell. A run of mixed rams from Mr T Kendall of Mevagissey to £156, £159 and £146.
Store Sheep
A fine trade for store lambs topping at £129 for a solid pen of Continentals from Messrs T F and D J Crapp, of Helston, at £129, with a further trio from the same vendor at £122, whilst a trio from Sturmans Livestock of Burlawn, Wadebridge realised £127.50.
A good trade for breeding ewes, topping at £172 on behalf of Mr A Richards of Bodmin, followed by pens from Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, at £154, and £151 and all looking well sold thereafter.
