Prime Cattle
Numbers tightening about this week and the trade would look improved for the types on offer.
Top price away to a quality 636kg Limousin heifer at 395p/kg (£2,512) and top price steer awarded to a classy 679kg Limousin one bid behind at 394p/kg (£2,675).
A 703kg Limousin steer from J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow went under the hammer at 390p/kg (£2,742), followed by yet another two quality Limousin steers from the same farm at 387p/kg (£2,647) and 375p/kg (£2,445).
A good Blue heifer from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro topped at 370p/kg (£2,002), followed by a pair of steers tied at 355p/kg being a 604kg Limousin from J B Old Farms and a 602kg Angus from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay.
A good 665kg Angus heifer from McCardell & Thompson parted away for 352p/kg (£2,341) and a 669kg Limousin steer from J B Old Farms traded at the same pence-per-kilo and £2,355.
Cull Cows
As with the Prime Beef the trade for cull animals would look strong for those on offer, with prices picking up across the board and supply reducing.
A tidy 618kg Hereford cow from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay took top honours at 338p/kg, followed by another consignment of cow-aged steers from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro with prices at 306p/kg for a Limousin and 304p/kg twice for a pair of Blues.
A Limousin cow from Mrs J G Benney of Nancegollan, Helston next at 300p/kg, followed by a Blue from Messrs C H Bird & Son of Hayle at 278p/kg, which was tied with a Limousin cow from Messrs Bird at the same money and another Blue from the same stable at 275p/kg thereafter.
Topping the dairy types was a good run of nine cows from Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro with top prices of 275p/kg, 270p/kg, 248p/kg and 246p/kg to name a few.
A Jersey cow from McCardell & Thompson Ltd realised 260p/kg and a Friesian from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston looked well sold at the same money.
Store Cattle
A particularly light entry with few near finished cattle as reflected in the prices.
Top price on the day was for a pair of 22 month old Angus steers on behalf of R M Farming & Co of Sticker, St Austell at £1870, with a further Hereford of the same age from the same vendor at £1750.
Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne sold four 17 month old Angus’s to £1700, whilst a pair of 16 month old Limousins from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro achieved £1475.
A single 2 year old Angus from Mr N C P Clemens of Gwinear, Hayle sold to £1450, followed by 1½ year old Blues from Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro at £1355 and £1265.
Heifers topping at £1610 and £1400 for Anguses from Mr N C P Clemens, followed by a 21 month old Angus from Messrs W S Gay & Son at £1305, which was also matched by Mr A Rowland of Redruth for a single 2 year old Angus.
Heifers thereafter to £1260, £1250, £1110 and £1105 on behalf of Messrs D C & W A Thomas.
Rearing Calves
Another strong trade for the best, but after the dizzy heights of last week the second quality would be a bit easier.
The milk calves saw unusually a Heifer make top price with a Limousin x flying away to £715 on behalf of Mr A Giles from Paul, Penzance closely followed with his Limousin x bulls at £710 and £695, then going on to sell an Aberdeen Angus x bull for £520, and an Aberdeen Angus x heifer for £480 and his British Blue x bull at £580.
Further Aberdeen Angus x bulls sold well at £575, £545 and £535 for Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance who also sold an Aberdeen Angus x heifer for £255.
Further British Blue x bulls selling for £540 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed, Grampound who also sold a British Blue x heifer for £420.
A lovely run of young Aberdeen Angus x calves on behalf of Mr D J Heller from Blackwater, Truro saw their bulls making £505, £490 x 3 and £410 with his Aberdeen Angus x heifers at £300 and £240.
Messrs A & B Pascoe from North Country, Redruth sold young Limousin x bulls at £440 and £400, with heifers at £370 and £320 twice, and then going on to light up the ring with a stronger pair of 3 month old Limousin x steers at £805 each and finally two Hereford x heifers sold for £415 each for Messrs L Wherry & Son from Sancreed, Penzance
Prime Lambs
A good entry forward and storming trade, with all types keenly contested. Overall average of £161/head and all lambs selling for over £140.
Topping the day at £200 for a single 67kg Dorset lamb were Messrs A J Gluyas-Morrish of Praze, Camborne, sold to McFadden’s Butchers of St Just, Penzance.
Setting the premium at 397p/kg for a quality pen of 46.6kg lambs from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Prime Hoggs
A single pen of three heavyweight hoggs this week from Ansell Brothers of Penzance with the 60.3kg heavies selling to £159 (264ppk) to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Cull Ewes
Another sizeable entry of cull ewes coinciding with our first breeding sale of the year. Continued very strong trade with increased prices on the week.
Top call of £218 for a big single continental ewe from Mr David & Tom Tremain of St Columb closely followed by a strong Charollais ewe from Mrs S A Scholes of North Country, Redruth at £216.
Texels from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge at £200; £188 from Messrs T F & D J Crapp of Helston and £186 from Messrs W R H & R P Heywood of Tregony, Truro.
Further Charollais x to £181 from Mr T Watters of Helston. Suffolks to £178 from Mr A J Gluyas-Morrish of Camborne.
Store Sheep
A strong entry this week including several close to finish types, all of which met a fast trade with spirited bidding.
The top price was £154 for a fleshy pair of Continental lambs on behalf of Mrs S A Scholes of North Country, Redruth, followed by a big consignment from Mr T M Michell of Truro with lots realising £145.50, £129.50 and £122.50.
A pair from Mr T D Retallick of St Columb realised £140.50, followed by a pen of 12 from Mr R Wootton of Zelah, Truro at £126.
