Prime Cattle

A fine entry through the ring this week, all mainly pre-booked with the auctioneers for buyer notification and we thank our vendors for doing so.

Yet another brisk trade, topping for steers at 398p/kg for a sensational 693kg Blue on behalf of Messrs V C & W G M Cock of Newbridge, Penzance, with a further Limousin from the same vendor realising 385p/kg.

As per previous weeks, top class cattle in from Messrs Julian of Summercourt, Newquay with their choice steer realising 395p/kg (668kg) with further bullocks to 392p/kg, 390p/kg and 382p/kg.

Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance sold a fine 17mo 683kg Simmental to 385p/kg, and another at 380p/kg, whilst Messrs F T & F M Johns of Cury, Helston sold a handy 588kg Limousin to 380p/kg. Non FABBL Angus steers to 348p/kg for Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green.

Messrs Johns took the top honours in the heifer section with Limousins selling to 378p/kg and 362p/kg, with McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay selling non FABBLE Angus to 345p/kg and South Devon to 343p/kg, whilst Messrs George of Penzance sold a handy 501kg Hereford Heifer to 345p/kg also.

Cull Cows

A shorter entry to report though strong trade across the board seeing beef types top at 309p/kg for a 661kg Blonde on behalf of Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay.

Mr P Green of Stithians, Truro sold a 707kg Stabiliser to 289p/kg, followed by Mrs C Wall of Liskeard with her handy 488kg Blue realising 250p/kg, followed by Devons from Mr J D May of St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly at 248p/kg and 238p/kg. A handy Devon from Messrs R H & R D Richards of Sparnon Gate, Redruth realised 240p/kg.

Dairy types topping at 270p/kg on behalf of Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth followed by a Jersey from Messrs G L Richards & Son of St Keverne, Helston at 258p/kg.

Cull bulls topping at 271p/kg for a hefty 989kg Hereford of behalf of Messrs M S Manuell & Son of Burngullow, St Austell.

Store Cattle

Fewer through the ring this week and particularly light in older close to finish stores, though steers topped at £2330 for a single 18mo South Devon on behalf of Mr Rex Sadler of Falmouth, followed by 1½ yr old steers for Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1800 and £1700.

1½ yr olds from Mr D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston sold to £1680 for Blues, £1505 for Limousins and £1505 for South Devons, whilst 1 yr old Devons from Messrs R H & R D Richards of Sparnon Gate, Redruth sold to £1320 and £1305. Messrs R A F, R M & R A Roberts of Gweek, Helston sold a 10mo Angus steer to £1140.

Mr D Jenkin sold 2 yr old heifers to £1465 thrice, whilst Mr P C Tregunna of Veryan Green, Truro sold a pair of 20mo Hereford heifers to £1435. Younger heifers topping at £1050 for a pair of 1 yr old Devons on behalf of Messrs R H & R D Richards.

Rearing Calves

A good entry of calves on offer this week, once again quality and strength selling on a solid trade, whilst second quality or some very young calves met with a more selective trade.

Top price of £685 was achieved by a Limousin x bull sold on behalf of Mr A Giles from Paul who also took top honours in the heifer section with their British Blue x heifer making £630 and going on to sell their Limousin x heifers for £470 and £420.

A nice run of young calves from Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian saw their best British Blue x bull away at £500 with further British Blue x bulls at £485, £465 and £460 and the best of their British Blue x heifers to £475.

Also selling a run of quality young calves being Hereford x from Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey seeing their best bull to £500 closely followed by further bulls at £490, £465, £460 and £450 and their British Blue x bull making £485 and their Hereford x Heifers to £405 and another at £380.

Further British Blue x bulls to £455 for Messrs G J D Champion & Son from Praze who also sold a British Blue x heifer for £375.

A nice Simmental x heifer from Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston looked well sold at £455 with plenty of other heifers marketed between £290 to £345 a very young Friesian bull flew away to £150 for Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East.

Prime Lambs

A good entry forward and flying trade from start to finish.

An overall average of 341p/kg and £160/head. A run of 3 pens of Texel x lambs from James Eustice Farms of St Ervan saw their best pick pair of butchers’ 50.5kg lambs sell to a top price of £194 (384p/kg) to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

This was closely followed by a single 55kg lamb from the ‘first pick’ consignment forward from Mr K Rogerson of St Agnes, which sold at £192, purchased by Stillmans Ltd.

Also high in the averages this week were a smart pair of 42kg blocky handyweight from Mr J D Couch of Lostwithiel, which realised 377p/kg, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Breeding Ewes

A quality entry of breeding ewes forward.

The sale started with a flock dispersal on behalf of Mr R. Rowe of Penhallow, comprising of principally Charollais x full mouth ewes, seeing his best pick sell to £210. Shearlings sold to a top price of £232 for two pens of Roussin x ewes from Mr W. F. Teagle of Trevithick, Newquay.

This was followed by a pen of big-frame 2T Charollais x ewes from Messrs W. J. Hicks and Son of St Merryn at £230. There was strong demand for all breeding ewes and entries are invited for our 3rd September breeding sale.

Breeding Rams

The second dedicated sale of Stock Rams at Truro for 2025 resulted in some outstanding top prices.

The Truro Market record for rams was broken again (twice) for the second time this year, with two superb MV accredited pedigree Texel shearling rams from Messrs MG, KJ, DG & BM Coumbe of Liskeard winning the day and selling to a fantastic £960 apiece.

Cull Ewes

Yet another week of fiery trade for cull ewes, with a stronger entry seeing increased averages and increased top prices on the week. Sailing away to £222.50 were the best of a run of Texels and Texel x from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge.

These were followed by a Dorset x to £201 from Mr M Udy of Demelza, Bodmin. Further Texels and Texel x to £199.50 and £177.50 again from Messrs Backway; £177 for a mixed pen of Texel & Suffolk ewes from Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey of St Keverne, Helston; £170 for Texel x from Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge; and £160 for Texels from Mr P McAnulty of St Austell.

Suffolk x Mule to £171 and £140 for Messrs J J & M Bowden of St Columb. Suffolk to £169 for Messrs P C J Farming of Breage, Helston. Further Dorsets to £169 again for Messrs P C J Farming.

Leicester to £165.50 for Mr N Taylor of Demelza, Bodmin. Cull Rams to £179 for a Charollais ram again from Mr Udy; £156 for a Suffolk ram from Mr J T Rowe of Camborne; £149 for a Zwartbles ram from Ms I Thomas of Redruth. A penful of 6-tooth Charollais wethers again for Mr Udy, selling at £156.50.

Store Lambs

A strong entry and similar trade to last week topping at £148.50 for a strong Texel x single on behalf of Messrs C D Greenaway of St Issey, Wadebridge, with further lambs from Messrs Greenaway to £135.50.

Messrs J J & M Bowden & Son of St Columb sold a good pen to £129, followed by a lamb from T B Mitchell & Partners of Idless, Truro at £126.
