A FAMILIAR name on Newquay’s high street has disappeared.

WHSmith in Bank Street has become TG Jones following the stores being sold to Modella Capital in June 2025.

The rebranding was done to allow WHSmith, which has been on Britain’s high street since 1792, to focus on its travel stores, while the high street shops were rebranded to TG Jones to evoke the sense of a long-standing, family-run business, even though the name does not refer to a specific individual.

Shopper Mike Lyon said: “The name change has happened but on the plus side the shop is still offering same services as WHSmith.

“It will be interesting to see how many months, years or decades it will be before we use the new name in conversation.”
