Redruth’s Murdoch Day festival returns to the town on Saturday, celebrating inventor William Murdoch’s ground-breaking achievements as well as the creativity and innovation that is booming in the town today.

A key part of the day will be the parade featuring Redruth Town Band and the Redruth Festival Band, children from local schools and community groups, RAF cadets, performers from Lowender and a special appearance by Mr and Mrs Murdoch in the form of puppets by Shallal.

Elsewhere there will be market stalls, the traditional fun fair in Flowerpot Chapel car park, vintage and steam vehicles, and Freddie Zapp’s live music stage in Green Lane.

The event will also see the first official appearance of Max Morrison, winner of the recent competition to find Redruth’s new town crier.

Just 17, Max was part of BBC Children in Need’s Surprise Squad last year and volunteers with local charity Penhaligon’s Friends, so brings plenty of experience to his new role.  Alice Lamming, Redruth Town Council community projects manager, said: “We’re really looking forward to a fantastic Murdoch Day, even bigger and better than last year. The theme of creativity and innovation has really caught people’s imaginations, so we can’t wait to see parade creations come to life on the day.”

The inventor’s former home at Murdoch House in Cross Street will be open for visitors to explore the new interactive exhibit, and The Murdoch Flyer will be positioned outside. There’ll also be circus skills workshops outside the Regal Theatre at the bottom of town.

Redruth Town Mayor Cllr Stephen Barnes said: “It was great to see Murdoch Day return last year and now I can’t wait for this year to celebrate the past, present and future of  Redruth.”

The day starts at 10am and finishes at 4pm, with the parade will starting from behind the cinema at around 11am.
