THIRTY years after Lord of the Dance took the world by storm an anniversary tour is celebrating the biggest-selling and most commercially successful dance show in history.

Michael Flately’s Lord of the Dance – 30 Years of Standing Ovations, is being performed at the Hall for Cornwall until Saturday, September 26. His original concept was to revolutionise traditional Irish dance by fusing it with contemporary music, storytelling, and theatrical production values.

The milestone anniversary show certainly revitalises it with updated, high-energy choreography, new state-of-the-art lighting, vibrant costumes though the core visual design remains unapologetically retro, keeping the classic 90s aesthetic.

The integration of live violinists, soaring Soprano vocals, and Gerard Fahy’s epic musical score provide an immersive backdrop.

The audience is treated to state-of-the-art staging and innovative special effects that elevate the timeless battle of good versus evil narrative of the Little Spirit, the Dark Lord, and the Lord of the Dance.

The star attraction of the show is undoubtedly the lightning-fast footwork. It is mesmerising. The show is said to feature 150,000 taps per performance, which creates an electrifying experience from start to finish.

What is even more impressive is the incredible synchronicity of the 40-person troupe with their unwavering smiles and razor-sharp timing. They did not put a foot wrong throughout the performance.

Though Flatley has retired from performing on a regular basis his presence looms large throughout the show from the opening biographical tribute to a clever video sequence of three Flatleys dancing in unison on screen, attempting to out-dance one another.
