A German photographer whose unusual photographic idea became an international success story after starting in Newquay is returning to where the adventure began.

Olaf von Dombrowski is staging a Travelling Teddy Bear exhibition at the Merrymoor Inn in Mawgan Porth between September 22 and 24, which is a widely followed storytelling project that uses a plush bear as a lens to explore landscapes, coastlines, and historic landmarks across Cornwall, Great Britain, and Europe.

He unveiled his The Travelling Teddy Bear photographs to the public for the first time at the Newquay Art8 Festival in 2013.

The photographic idea has since become popular around Europe with more far than 100 exhibitions across England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Scotland. Olaf and his wife and muse, Birgit, will be taking The Travelling Teddy Bear on another photographic journey around Cornwall during their stay to discover and capture some of the Duchy’s most beautiful, unusual and memorable places.

Catherina Erlenhofer, who is helping to organise the exhibition, said: “This is far more than a collection of cute teddy bear photographs. Seeing Britain through a teddy bear’s eyes.

“The Travelling Teddy Bear is about storytelling and about seeing familiar places from a completely different perspective.

“In Olaf’s photographs, Britain’s landscapes, coastlines, landmarks and hidden gems become the backdrop for the little travelling protagonist. The result is often playful and charming, but there is also something more personal behind the pictures, a genuine fascination with Britain and the places that make it special. And Cornwall has always had a particularly special place in the project’s heart.

“Whenever The Travelling Teddy Bear returns from Cornwall, the adventure continues online, with Olaf sharing his favourite discoveries with more than 8,700 followers on Facebook.

“For Olaf, Cornwall is not simply another destination. It is where the story began. From Newquay to the world and back again.”
