A FEARSOME dragon from Cornish folklore is set to take up residence at the National Trust propert of Trelissick, near Truro, for Halloween with the return of Dark Cornwall.
Created by Truro-based Mexican artist Christian Escalante Castillo, the giant dragon of Porthtowan is a towering sculpture inspired by the legendary beast said to have terrorised the north Cornish village.
It’s among a host of mythical creatures appearing throughout the house, garden and stables from October 17 to November 1, bringing some of Cornwall's strangest stories and legends spectacularly to life for the celebration of Kalan Gwav – Cornish for "first day of winter".
Look out for a distinctive interpretation of the Bucca, a mysterious sea-spirit from Cornish folklore, by Riva Bryson of Flotsam Fables, alongside sea-fae sculptures and an exhibition of 26 works by 21 artists in Trelissick's West Library.
Kalan Gwav debuted at Trelissick last year, and 2026 promises more art, storytelling and opportunities for visitors of all ages. A ticketed lecture lunch on October 20 with Rob Vickery of Dark Cornwall will explore the folklore and legends that have inspired the event.
“Our mission is to bring the wonder of local folklore back to families and children,” said Mr Vickery. “It’s wonderful to see so much creativity gathered in one place and shared with visitors this Halloween.”
In addition, from October 24 to November 1, Cornwall Heritage Trust’s resident storyteller James Parnham-Kenny and Cornish performance group Story Republic will be among the storytellers sharing their passion for Cornwall’s rich folklore.
Trelissick property operations manager Jen Pina said: “We hope these experiences will inspire a new generation to discover the stories, places and landscapes that make Cornwall so special.”
Entry to the Kalan Gwav celebrations is included with admission to Trelissick and is free for National Trust members. Trelissick garden is open daily from 10am to 5pm throughout the Kalan Gwav experience. Booking is essential for the lecture lunch; tickets are available in advance from the Trelissick website.
