FEATURE documentary Our Land is the next film to be screened for free at independent cinemas across Cornwall on May 5 and 6 as part of the BFI Escapes initiative.

Our Land follows landowners and Right to Roam campaigners as they battle over the future of England’s countryside. An estimated 92 per cent of land and 97 per cent of rivers in England are not legally accessible to the public, and in recent years, campaigners have organised ‘mass trespass’ events to increase public access to the countryside, coming into conflict with landowners.

These free screenings will give Escapes audiences a chance to see Our Land before its UK-wide cinema release on Friday, May 8.

For director Orban Wallace, the subject is personal. “I grew up in the Dorset countryside in a rented cottage deep in the forest of a private estate. Even though we lived in the woods, we were not allowed in them as they were private. I regularly had run-ins with the gamekeeper who would tell us to get out. So, I was a trespasser by necessity from a very young age.”

Our Land gives voice both to those fighting for greater access to nature, and to the landowners who claim to be stewards of the land – all while bringing England’s countryside to the big screen.

Supported by National Lottery Funding. Escapes is a nationwide cinema initiative designed to make cinema more accessible and bring new audiences to local venues. More than 220,000 free cinema tickets have been claimed since its launch in 2024.

Tickets for Our Land are available now at escapetothecinema.co.uk. Cornwall cinemas taking part include Plaza Cinema, Truro; White River Cinema, St Austell; Phoenix Cinema, Falmouth; Regal Cinema, Redruth; Newlyn Filmhouse; Savoy Cinema, Penzance and Capitol Cinema, Bodmin.
