DEAR Evan Hansen makes its amateur debut in Cornwall next week when Truro Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (TAODS) brings the acclaimed musical to the Redannick Theatre.

Running from Tuesday, October 13 to Saturday, October 17, the thought-provoking show explores grief, loneliness, family relationships, mental health and the complicated impact of social media. At its heart is a simple but increasingly important message: the need to reach out, talk and truly connect with one another.

The title character is a socially anxious teenager who struggles to find his place in the world. When a misunderstanding following the death of fellow student Connor spirals beyond his control, Evan experiences something he has longed for: connection and a sense of belonging. But as the story grows, so too do the consequences.

Taking on the demanding role of Evan is Kieran Faithfull, alongside Bryony James as his mother Heidi. The Murphy family is played by Matt Watters as Connor, Caitlin Stephens as Zoe, Karenza Taylor as Cynthia and Gavin Dalziel as Larry.

They are joined by Harry Charleston as Jared Kleinman and Thivinya Samarawickrama as Alana Beck. The production is directed by Kathy West, with Nick Long as Musical Director.

Securing the opportunity to stage the musical so soon after it became available to amateur companies has made this an especially exciting production for the volunteer-run society,

Retiring collections will be held after each performance to support the work of Man Down Cornwall, a charity providing informal peer-support talking groups for men experiencing mental health concerns across Cornwall.

The partnership reflects many of the themes explored within the musical - particularly the importance of talking, listening and recognising that someone who appears surrounded by people can still feel profoundly alone.

TAODS hopes the result will be an evening that audiences not only enjoy, but continue talking about long after they leave the theatre.
