Derek Thomas has been re-selected by the Conservative party as their candidate in the St Ives constituency for the next general election.
Mr Thomas has been Member of Parliament for the West Cornwall and St Ives constituency since 2015, winning three general elections in a row and growing his majority to 4,284.
This did not mean he was automatically the Conservative candidate at the next election – the decision was made by the St Ives Constituency Conservative Association (STICCA).
At a meeting of the Selection Council, made up of elected delegates from every division in the constituency, members considered Mr Thomas’ achievements as MP and his ambitions for the next Parliament.
Following a presentation, STICCA voted unanimously to adopt him as their prospective Parliamentary candidate at the next general election.
John Underhill, deputy chairman (political) of STICCA, said: “I am delighted Derek has been confirmed as the Conservative candidate at the general election. As our MP since 2015, he has worked hard to represent his constituents in West Cornwall.
“He will now focus on the issues which matter – jobs, skills and housing, and supporting local businesses.
“I am sure he will win again in 2024 with his experience and track record of success.”
Mr Thomas said: “It has been a privilege to represent the people of West Cornwall for the last eight years, and one that I have never taken for granted.
“I am delighted, and humbled, that the volunteers who work tirelessly for the party have chosen me as their candidate for the next election.
“I am proud of my record as a constituency MP, and I am looking forward, with their help, to building on that record in the next Parliament.”
The next general election is scheduled to be held no later than January 2025.
