Dear Readers, I wanted to take inspiration this week from a cream tea event I attended a couple of Sundays ago and talk about ‘giving’ back to the community.
I am now in the lucky position that I have time to volunteer being a Newquay town councillor, however, free time is precious to most, as it was for me when working and having young children. So, I want to share two quick ways you can contribute to society. The first is the attendance for an hour or so at a charity coffee and cake fund-raiser. The one that I recently attended was for Breast Cancer Awareness held at St Michael’s Church.
Homemade amazing cakes and the makings of a cream tea adorned the table, lovingly prepared and available for a donation. What a bargain! I also got to meet new people, residents and visitors, with discussions on Town issues. We all know people that have been impacted by health debilitating diseases, so attending a fund-raiser occasion can make a huge difference (https://www.breastcanceruk.org.uk).
The other ‘giving’ I do and feel strongly about is Blood Donation. I have just booked online my 59th donation session. The whole process of giving blood takes an hour or less, and the difference that it can make to society is immense. These days you find out where your blood has gone, whether to a hospital for an individual or for scientific research which could help thousands in the future (https://www.blood.co.uk).
So please think about how you can give a little time to make a big impact to us all. Deputy Mayor Cllr Sarah Thomson

A very different week ahead regarding weather , fresh westerly winds, rain, and north west wind at the weekend.
Very busy last week in the harbour, probably busiest I’ve seen. Silver Day went very well, juniors, ladies, then twice around for the mens. Glasses were presented by Chas Mills, secretary of Gig Trustees. This weekend is the Ladies County Championships, 100 plus crews, but weather looking unsettled, see how it goes. Disco on Saturday night in Rowing Club.
