Two local councillors have joined forces to call for improvements on the surfacing of a busy stretch of road in St Austell.
Richard Pears, Cornwall Councillor for Mount Charles and Poltair, and James Mustoe, Cornwall Councillor for Mevagissey and St Austell Bay, have asked that the council prioritise resurfacing the stretch of Porthpean Road that runs from the junction of Cromwell Road to the Duporth crossroads.
This follows a number of complaints from local residents about the road, which marks the border of the two council divisions.
Cllr Pears said: “The character of this once predominantly rural road has changed with the building of hundreds of houses at Duporth and in the new estate off Porthpean Road, and this means this road is now much busier than it ever was before.
“This, combined with increased numbers of parents driving to school twice a day means this road suffers from severe wear and tear, and it is clear that it needs resurfacing urgently.
“James and I have met on site and collected evidence to support the problem.
“We have now fed this back to Cormac and asked that they take action to improve the road surface as soon as possible.”
Cllr Mustoe said: “As someone who walks along this road every day, I am fed up reporting the constant potholes that appear seemingly every week!
“To the council’s credit, they come out and quickly refill the potholes once notified, but these invariably break up again shortly afterwards.”
“I am convinced that in some places there are now more patches than there is road surface, and it is time something was done about it.”
“This, combined with the flooding issues that we regularly experiences at the other end of the road, mean there are several hazards for road users coming from St Austell, Duporth, Porthpean and beyond.
“I am pleased to be working with Richard in calling for the council to sort this stretch of road out, and hope they will listen and act appropriately.”
