A Cornwall councillor has been selected as the Lib Dem candidate for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle at the next general election.

Thalia Marrington has been chosen as the prospective parliamentary candidate and will be campaigning on various issues including the cost of living crisis.

Thalia won election to Cornwall Council in 2021, with a victory in a safe Conservative seat in the Mousehole, Newlyn and St Buryan division.

The Penzance town councillor has swiftly gained a reputation as a hard-working local councillor, and has taken a lead in campaigning to tackle violence against women and girls.

Before becoming a councillor, Thalia worked in education and as a professional musician, and her two teenage children were born and brought up in Cornwall.

Thalia said: “I’m proud to have been selected by my party to help fight for change here in Camborne, Redruth and Hayle.

“The cost of living crisis is having a devastating effect on people’s lives and on local  businesses.

“The Lib Dems want an economy that works for everyone, where local people can afford a secure place to live, and public services are rebuilt after years of neglect.

“People are telling us they feel let down by the current government. They want to see honesty, integrity and accountability in politics and that is what I’m here to offer.

“As a councillor, the simple liberal values of openness, fairness and tolerance run through every decision I make.”

Local party chair Iain MacDonald said: “We are delighted to have a candidate of Thalia’s calibre working to represent this constituency.

“Her record as a Cornwall councillor speaks for itself, as does her warmth, integrity and evident concern about the challenges faced by local people.

“Voters have simply had enough of this incompetent government and are clearly ready for change.”
