CORNWALL Council has issued a statement about the future of the park and ride sites on either side of Truro now that First Bus – which operates the service – has announced it is pulling out of Cornwall.

First Bus South plans to withdraw all bus services from the Duchy, with the final day of operations scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2026.

The company proposed to withdraw its 85-bus fleet and cease operation of 14 bus routes across its five depots in Camborne, Falmouth, Penzance, Summercourt and Truro, including the Tregurra and Langarth Park and Ride facilities in the city.

The decision was made due to “sustained financial challenges” that have made the Cornwall market unsustainable for many years. Reasons cited for the heavy losses include rising operating costs, a fall in passenger numbers and a downward trend in tourism.

The announcement means 275 employees are at risk of redundancy across the five depots, specifically staff who do not work for Flix Bus or Truronian Coaches.

First Kernow was awarded the contract to run the Truro Park and Ride service for three years from September 2024.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “Truro Park and Ride is a service contracted by Cornwall Council and will continue to run. We are currently in discussions with operators and will provide an update for passengers when we can.”

The council has announced it is also undertaking a public consultation for a proposal to introduce a £1 daily charge for those who wish to park at Tregurra or Langarth, but not ride on the buses.

“This will help support the maintenance of the car parks. The charge will not apply to passengers using the park and ride service,” added the spokesperson.
